. . 'fm€uxm numm-m. Discovery. Neon was discovered in 1898 by 'William Ramsay and Morris Travers' at 'University College London' shortly after the discovery of krypton in the same year. They both froze argon sample with the help of liquid air and slowly evaporated argon under low pressure to collect the new gas. They applied a high voltage to a vacuum tube placed with the obtained gas sample to observe the spectrum. Interestingly, they perceived a brilliant glow, which had never been seen before. The scientists named the new gas neon, which means "new" in Latin.
. . 20XX presentation title 6. Properties. Neon is reddish-orange colored in neon lamps and vacuum discharge tubes .Neon is a colorless, odorless inert gas. It belongs to the group called Noble gases and the second lightest noble gas in the periodic table. It is chemically inert gas and non-toxic in nature. There is no threat to the environment and has no impact since it's non-reactive and does not form compounds. This element cause no ecological damage It has the lowest liquid range of any element..
. . 20XX presentation title 7. Production. Neon is the fifth most abundant chemical element in the universe it is present in the Earth's atmosphere at a concentration of just 18 parts per million. Neon can be produced as a by-product from the liquefaction of air and by separation from other elements using fractional distillation. This gives a fraction that contains both helium and neon. The helium is removed from the mixture with activated charcoal..
. . Uses. The largest use of neon is in making the ubiquitous 'neon signs' for advertising. In a vacuum discharge tube neon glows a reddish orange color. Only the red signs actually contain pure neon. Others contain different gases to give different colors. Neon is also used to make high-voltage indicators and switching gear, lightning arresters, diving equipment and lasers. The electronics industry uses neon singly or in mixtures with other gases in many types of gas-filled electron tubes. Gas lasers are made with the help of neon and helium. Liquified neon is commercially used as an economical cryogenic refrigerant. A mixture of helium and neon is used for respiration by marine divers in the sea since helium is less soluble in blood than nitrogen at high pressure..
