Astro space NEWS •eekJy' ezp•byeo Agro August 2, 1993 .New Spec Cuts Spacecraft Costs Spacecraft propulsion system lines, fittings and . components are fabricated from stainless steel and titanium alloy materials. These parts are assembled in-house by gas tungsten arc welding. Since the arc welding of stainless steel to titanium alloy does not provide a sound weld joint, bi-metallic transition tubes can now be used in the propulsion system. Materials Applications and Propulsion Engineering developed a specification to procure Inertia Friction Welded bi-metallic transition tubes to replace the more costly Co-Extruded tubes. Qualification has been completed and fabrication of flight hardware has been initiated. A 70% piece part cost savings has been achieved with initial implementation on Inmarsat.
