[Audio] Management of an multi-storeyed office building in New York received complaints from the occupants about the long waiting time for elevator during peak hours Some of them threatened to break the rental agreement and move out of the building.
[Audio] Feasibility studies revealed absence of an engineering solution by installing an additional elevator or replacing the older elevator with a faster and newer one due to the age of the building. If no solution is on the horizon is "Learn to live with the problem" the only option?.
[Audio] The Management called for a brainstorming session in an effort to find a feasible solution to the problem. The only one who had not participated in the discussion was the young personnel psychologist, when the general manager singled out the young dude reluctantly presented his opinion He pointed out that it was a behavioural problem due to boredom and he said the problem is that of giving those waiting something to occupy their time pleasantly..
[Audio] He suggested a simple yet powerful solution to this problem His idea was to install mirrors in the elevator boarding areas The management accepted the idea and mirrors are installed in elevator boarding areas The cost was minuscule compared to the cost of installing a new elevator.
[Audio] By placing mirrors near the elevators, occupants will have something visually engaging to focus on while they wait. It will provide a distraction, making the waiting time feel shorter and more bearable. Impulsively people started correcting their hairdo, makeup, etc. when they saw mirror Many found it amusing and pleasant to watch others through the mirror..
[Audio] To the surprise the complaints regarding waiting time reduced to near zero level This case study highlights the potential cost of placing a problem in a disciplinary box and overlooking alternative solutions. Sometimes, it takes a fresh perspective and thinking outside the conventional boundaries to find a simple yet powerful solution. By embracing unconventional ideas and encouraging diverse thinking, we can discover innovative approaches that effectively tackle tricky problems. While everyone was thinking it as an engineering problem, the young psychologist identified it as a behavioural problem. "The power of simplicity is often overlooked in a complex world.".
[Audio] The source of this interesting case study is book titled "Turning Learning Right Side Up Putting Education Back on Track" by Russell L. Ackoff and Daniel Greenberg.
