[Audio] A presentation on a proposal for a research investigation into Change Management, in fulfillment of the requirements for a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Bedfordshire. Good day. My name is Kevin Miller and for the module theory into practice, I have chosen to conduct a critical analysis of change management in Qatar's oil and gas industry. This topic is linked to the general M-B-A module Leading and Managing Resources with a focus on change management and leadership. The following slide will provide further insights into the background and rationale for the study, its scope, aims and objectives, along with the theories and methods of analysis utilized which will be supported by evidence and data..
[Audio] Introduction: In this impulsive and unpredictive world, disruptive forces always find their way into the business environment, making the need for change essential. Hashim 2013 in Kumarasinghe 2021 defines change management as an altering of the current concepts of business procedures into a new style or model to achieve long term sustainability for businesses. Background: The nation of Qatar has been a key player in the global energy market sector since discovering oil and gas in 1940. According to Sarakh, 2021, as Qatar seeks to move toward a National Vision of sustainability by the year 2030, organizational culture change is required to ensure success of the introduction and implementation of sustainability initiatives. Rationale: Sarakh, 2021 also highlighted where research has shown that several organizations within Qatar's oil and gas sector are experiencing challenges in embedding the sustainability agenda within their systems and processes as there is much resistance to change as well as a lack of knowledge and awareness. As such, this research seeks to overcome these challenges in change management through analyses of the previous strategies employed and the identification of best practices for effective change management. Scope: This study will focus on the oil and gas operations of the 3 major industrial cities in Qatar with 3 companies that has a minimum of 51% Qatar ownership. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this research is to critically analyze the change management process within Qatar's oil and gas industry to improve organizational effectiveness and support the realization of Qatar's National Vision 2030. The objectives are to analyze the outcomes of past change initiatives to determine their effectiveness, to assess how leadership approaches and management styles affect the success of change initiatives in the industry, to explore specific barriers to change management in the oil and gas industry, and lastly to identify best practices for effective change management in the Qatar Oil and Gas Industry. Influential Theories: 4 core influential theories will be employed to stare this research. A-D-K-A-R Model of Change Management This model posits that individual resistance to change can be effectively handled through the incorporation of five stages, which are: awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, and reinforcement. Vroom-Yetton Decision Model This decision-making model on leadership determines five leadership styles and highlights how leadership styles can have a positive or negative effect on change. Schein's Organization Culture Framework To explore barriers to change management, an understanding of the organizational culture must be first established. This framework will be utilized to understand the barriers to change from a culture perspective. Kotter's Change Management Model This model outlines 8 steps that can lead to effective change management, with a critical step of anchoring change in the culture of the organization. Methods of Analysis: A systematic review will be utilized to outline the overall structure and scope of the research question as it is more thorough. To extrapolate the related information, peer-reviewed articles and journals will be sourced via the use of search engines such as Google Search and Google Scholar, as well as sites such as sage, Emerald Insights, ResearchGate et cetera, using key search terms such as 'change management' and 'leadership'. The themes within the data set would be analyzed to identify meaning via the use of qualitative thematic analysis. Evidence and Data: Shah et al, 2023 opines that change management must be effective and sustainable for it to be implemented adequately. According to Hashim, 2014, Creating the right climate.
