Step by step procedure for sputum collection, packaging and transport.

Instruct the patient not to brush their teeth. Procedure.

Identify the patient.

The Pantient should be instructed to sit or stand and open the specimen container.

Inhale deeply 2-3 times, breathe out hard each time..

Cough deeply from the chest then spit inside the specimen container.

Properly seal the specimen.

Samples that cannot be transported immediately should be refrigerated to reduce growth of contaminating organisms.

Specimens should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible, within 24 hours of collection is optimal.

Laboratories may include a cold pack with specimen transport materials.
