Relationship with humans. Is the species useful to humans ? The marmots are not particularly useful . Except in Bavaria where they are protected , they are hunted . In the past , they were only eaten in times of need , but today their meat is sometimes considered a delicacy . There are also marmot ointments and creams made from the fat of the animals , which apparently have an anti- rheumatic effect . However , this effect has not been proven but the use of such products is widespread . Is the species in conflict with humans ? In the past , it was considered a great stroke of luck if mountain hikers caught sight of a marmot . But now there are numerous quite trusting animals - especially around the alpine huts - because they are fed by tourists . I have seen a lot of Murmeli by my own ..

Marmot closed season from 16 October to 31 August regulated by the Federal Act on Hunting and the Protection of Wild Mammals and Birds 1986 (as of 2017). The cantons may extend the closed season if special protection is required . In exceptional cases and with the permission of the federal government , the closed season can also be shortened ( overpopulation ). In Austria , too , hunting laws are slightly different in each federal state and closed seasons can be adjusted if necessary . In Germany, marmots are subject to hunting laws , but enjoy a closed season all year round ..
