abstract. From HoD’s desk. The Department of Agricultural Biotechnology at AAU, Jorhat is relatively a new department that came in existence in 1996. During the merely 30 years of its existence, the department has emerged as one of the most prestigious asset of the University all by dint of the hard work of the students, the teaching faculty and the supporting staff of the department. To date, the department has produced more than 300 masters and nearly 100 PhD holders. The genetically manipulated chickpea is one of the most important and well-known advances that has been made in the department. Additionally, we have developed technology for preparation of ' Xaaj ' a traditional rice wine and some other fermented foods. Recognizing the advancements of the department, the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, had established the DBT-AAU centre for research in the biotechnology sector for entire North-Eastern India in 2011. The faculty and students of the department have also gained national as well as international recognition. Several of the faculty are serving as members of many top scientific committees, and editorial boards of various reputed scientific journals. I, as the head of the department, which we lovingly call the ABT family, congratulate all the faculty members, student and staff for their achievements, which have made us what we are today..
