The following is the thesis we will address: Part-time jobs can provide benefits for high school students but it is also important to consider potential drawbacks and find balance between work life and school life..
[Audio] Factors to Consider Individual circumstances (age maturity level academic performance home financial situation) Job type (hours responsibilities work environment) Job support (flexibility understanding of manager) School support (flexible scheduling counselor support teacher support/understanding of circumstances) Parental involvement and support (setting limits and boundaries monitoring progress) Some factors that need to be considered when addressing the issue are 1. Individual circumstances 2. What type of job will the student be working? 3. What kind of job support is available? 4. School support) 5. How involved are your parents?.
[Audio] Factors to Consider Individual factors to consider include: Age Maturity level Academic performance thus far Home/financial situation Individual Circumstances Individual factors include (what is the age maturity level prior academic performance and home financial situation of the student involved?) Is the student well equipped emotionally to handle the extra responsibility? Have they proven good academic performance prior to having a job? What is their home financial situation? Are they working because they have to help support their family or are they working for pocket change for themselves?.
[Audio] Another factor to consider is job type What are the hours required? What are the job responsibilities? What is the work environment like? Job Type When considering job type as a factor it is very important to make note of the following: (What are the hours responsibilities and work environment? Will the student still be able to complete their school work in a timely fashion and still get adequate rest? Do they play sports in addition and how does that factor in? Is the work environment stressful? If the student is going to be overly stressed by too many responsibilities specifically as a student athlete which I am is it worht them having the extra responsibility of a job? If they're not able to mentally and physically balance all of their responsibilities having a job may not be the best idea. Is the job physically and mentally taxing?.
[Audio] Another factor to consider is support from the employer itself: What are my hours? Do my hours center around my school needs? What kind of responsibilities will I have at work? The amount of pressure at work Is my job flexible and understanding? Job Support Job support is a very important factor when it comes to deciding if having a job would be a good idea as a high school student. (Is the manager supportive and understanding of your school responsibilities and do they understand that school comes first? My parents have discussed with me that having a job as a student will be okay as long as everyone involved knows that school comes first. It would need to be conveyed to my manager that my schooling is the most important thing and my hours at work would need to work around my school schedule not the other way around. Also if I have an assignment that needs to be done last minute will my manager understand that sometimes I may need to leave early or even not take a shift in order to get my school work done..
[Audio] Factors to Consider Parental involvement is also important: What boundaries/limits have my parents set (hours/mount of money I need to earn)? My parents’ expectations regarding keeping up with grades. Will my parents be monitoring my grades/rest patterns? Are they supportive of my job? Parental Support The most important factor in considering getting a job in my opinion is parental support. Have they given you limits and boundaries and are they monitoring your progress? My parents have explained to me that it is okay if I get a job but if so they will be very much monitoring to make sure that my school work quality is not going down and that my grades are not affected. Parents have to be willing to "pull the plug" on the job if school qwrk quality drops. Also are parents willing to give risdes to work. Even things such as transportation need to be considered. Students don't need the extra stress of finding their own ride to work if they are not able to drive..
[Audio] Factors to Consider School support is also very important: Availability of work-study opportunities? Are my counselors supportive? Are my teachers supportive/understating? Is flexible scheduling allowed? School Support Also extremely important is support from your school. (is there flexible scheduling available with school classes? Does the student get to leave early for work/study balance? Are your counselors and teachers understanding of your extra responsibilities? This is very important because if your teachers are understanding of your circumstances it would be helpful if they realize the pressure you are under and help to make things more flexible for you if necessary..
