Republic day is celebrated on the 24 th  September to commemorate the date when the country’s parliament had its first session.  This was to avoid coincidence with independence day so citizens got two public holidays. Republic day was not  from 1999 to 2001 celebrated to make room for Shouter Baptist Liberation Day. In 2002 the holiday was reinstated and observed every year since with speeches, parades, dance and other festive events.

Trinidad and Tobago became independent on 31 st  august 1962 via the independence act of 1962 within the commonwealth realm with queen Elizabeth 11  as its titular head of state. On 1 st  august 1976 Trinidad and Tobago decided to abolish the monarchy and become a republic within the commonwealth. The new constitution was promulgated, and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was born.

WHAT CHANGES TOOK PLACE AFTER TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO BECAME REPUBLIC

Governor general was replaced by a president  A  flag to replace the Queen’s Personal Flag and the Governor General’s flag.   R eferences to the Monarch, Queen and the Crown were removed from legislation passed after that time as well as from oaths of allegiance, with references to ‘the Crown’ being replaced with ones to ‘the State’, and Queen’s Counsels becoming Senior Counsels. The St Edward’s Crown was removed from the emblems of the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, assuming it hadn’t been removed from them before then, or formed part of them at all.

By contrast, the Queen did not appear on the coins of the Trinidad and Tobago dollar introduced in 1966, only on the banknotes, with the only change to coins following republic status being the addition of a national bird or flower. The Queen’s Official Birthday was a public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago, but this was discontinued not long after independence, before the move to becoming a republic, which first began with a review of the Constitution in 1974. Although Trinidad and Tobago became a republic on 1 August 1976, Republic Day is celebrated on 24 September, which commemorates the day that the country’s Parliament first met following the adoption of the new republican Constitution.

The  Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago  is the  legislative branch  of the Government of  T rinidad and  T obago . It’s a two part y system and a bicameral parliamentary system based on Westminster system.  Besides the   President of Trinidad and Tobago , it is composed of the  House of Representatives , which is composed of the  Speaker of the House of Representatives  in addition to 41 directly elected members serving a five-year term in  single-seat constituencies , and the  Senate  which has 31 members appointed by the President: 16 Government Senators appointed on the advice of the  Prime Minister  6 Opposition Senators appointed on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition and 9 Independent Senators appointed by the President to represent other sectors of civil society. It is at present the only parliament in the world with an incumbent female  President ,  President of the Senate ,  Speaker of the House of Representatives  and  Leader of the Opposition.
