Works. Push (1996). The Kid (2011). The Voice of a Child (2021).
[Audio] Sapphire uses narrative, descriptive, and poetic writing styles in her works. Her stories are told from the character's point of view and sometimes her own. Her works contain imagery that creates a vivid description for the reader as well as raw emotion to create an understanding of the story. As far as themes, there are many different ones. However, the connection between her works is the lives of African Americans and the internal and external issues they face. This theme is heavily used in the works Push and The Kid. "A major focus of my art has been my determination to reconnect to the mainstream of human life a segment of humanity that has been cast off and made invisible. I have brought into the public gaze women who have been marginalized by sexual abuse, poverty, and their blackness. Through art I have sought to center them in the world." -Sapphire.
[Audio] The novel Push, published in 1996, was Sapphire's first novel. It is semi-based on a true story and is about a young African-American girl that is enduring sexual abuse and poverty as well as being insecure about her appearance. The book also showcases how she copes and overcomes these obstacles. It is her most popular novel and inspired a popular movie. Can you guess which one?.
