Introduction. The Shark Bay mouse is a small, robust rodent native to Australia. It has shaggy brown fur that fades to white underneath, large black eyes, and a long tail. These mice primarily inhabit coastal dunes and sandy areas sheltered by spinifex. They are omnivorous, feeding on flowers, leaves, insects, and spiders. Once widespread across western Australia, they are now restricted to Bernier, Faure, and Northwest Island in Shark Bay. Threats include predation by feral cats and foxes, habitat changes due to introduced herbivores, and competition with rabbits..

.. 20XX. Sample Txt. 5. Species Overview.
Problem Definition and Research. Identify the problem: The Shark Bay mouse is endangered. Research the species: Gather information about its habitat, behaviour, diet, and threats..
Description. Shark Bay Mouse are a rather robust species with a notably long and shaggy coat. Their fur is grizzled dark brown above and buff on the sides, and animals have pure white underparts. The species has a bicoloured tail consisting of grey above and white below. Adults have a head-body length of 80 – 115 mm and their weight ranges from 30 to 61 g, with an average of 45 g..
Habitat. Where They Roam: The Shark Bay mouse currently calls Western Australia home. Specifically, you’ll find it on Bernier Island in the Shark Bay area, as well as two translocated populations on Northwest Island and Faure Island. Sandy Hideaways: These mice prefer sandy areas, especially coastal dunes. They seek shelter among coastal daisy and beach spinifex. Imagine them darting through the dunes, foraging for abundant flowers, leaves, spiders, and insects. Occasional Inland Adventures: Sometimes, they venture further inland, mingling with spinifex and wattle heath.
Diet. Culinary Preferences: These native mice have a diverse palate. They feast on flowers (likely from the Coastal daisy bush), munch on leaves and stems from fleshy plant species, and even indulge in fungi, insects, and spiders..
Distribution. Once widespread across the southwestern and central regions of Australia, the Shark Bay mouse faced a decline and became extinct on the mainland soon after European settlement. However, there’s hope! Wild populations now thrive on Bernier and Faure islands within the Shark Bay area, as well as Northwest Island. Additionally, plans are underway to reintroduce this resilient little rodent to Dirk Hartog Island as part of the Return to 1616 project.
Threats. Predation by feral cats and foxes, habitat changes due to introduced herbivores, and competition with rabbits..
