Overview of JKUAT. JKUAT is a state University situated at Juja, 36 kilometres north-east of Kenya’s capital City of Nairobi. The university was founded as a middle level college through a bilateral technical agreement between the governments of Japan and Kenya, The college admitted its pioneering 180 students in 1981 Seven years later in 1988, it was elevated to a Constituent University College of Kenyatta University, before assuming full Fledged university in 1994 through an Act of Parliament. Official bilateral Japanese aid to JKUAT that had lasted for 19 years ended in the year 2000. Following the enactment of the Universities Act 2012, and the repeal of the JKUAT Act,1994; the university was re-charted on March 1 st 2013..

Fostering Research Culture. JKUAT has been at the forefront in fostering research culture and innovation among faculty and students and has been instrumental in supporting incubation of research into viable ventures. The establishment of JKUAT Industrial Park has been instrumental in supporting incubation of research into viable ventures. In 2016 JKUAT won a competitive bid to supply, install and commission digital learning devices in 21 counties. Through the Park, JKUAT also assembled digital devices used in the 2019 first paperless Kenya Population and Housing Census. PAUSTI. JKUAT is proactive in Africa’s development mainly through various research initiatives. In March 2011, JKUAT won a highly competitive African Union Sponsored project bid to host the Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation (PAUSTI). PAUSTI is a continental centre for graduate training and research aimed at promoting integration among African states through higher education and research. The Institute has so far admitted 9 cohorts cohort, drawn from 42 African countries.
Sino-Africa Joint Research Centre ( SAJOREC). JKUAT is as well host to the China funded Sino Africa Joint Research centre which has been at the forefront in advancing biodiversity research and conservation in the continent. Sino-Africa Joint Research Centre, a Chinese government-funded project that sits on 40 acres of land at JKUAT was launched in December 13, 2018. The establishment of the Sino-Africa Joint Research Centre (SAJOREC) at JKUAT is set to enhance the region’s research capacity in sustainable natural resources conservation, bio-medicine for universal health and modern agricultural techniques..

Student Welfare. Excellent accommodation, health, catering and sports facilities including an Olympic size swimming pool are in place for use by students. However, because of the large number of students seeking admission at JKUAT, it is not possible to provide accommodation to all our students. The University has forged a working relationship with investors in the neighbourhood who have put up alternative accommodation facilities for students who miss to secure University accommodation. The University involves students in all its decision-making organs and student's representatives participate in Council, Senate, Faculty, Institute, School and Departmental Boards through their own organisation: Jomo Kenyatta University Students Association (JKUSA), a body that safeguards and articulates students' interests..
