Firms that dedicate part of their efforts to markets abroad have intensified their search for competitive advantages ( Hitt , Hoskisson, & Kim, 1997), in order to confront the competition and survive in these markets For the decision to export (Table 7), the results indicate that product innovations (DP) and number of product innovations (NP), patents (DPAT) and number of patents registered (NPAT) and innovations in the productive process (DPROC) have a positive and highly significant impact (p!0.01), and these results remain constant in all the models estimated The diverging effect of R&D spending on the decision to export on the one hand, and on export intensity on the other, can be understood in the sense that the mere fact that firms invest in R&D does not necessarily imply that they will have more capacity to gain access to these markets, since this spending in R&D may not have resulted in innovations in either products or productive processes—i.e. it may not have conferred any competitive advantages With regards belonging to a technology-intensive sector, the results indicate that the effect is positive but not significant on the decision to export, it is highly significant on export intensity (p!0.01) The technological capacity of the firm has been measured in a multiple way, employing the familiar R&D investment complemented with product innovations, the patents registered and the process innovations undertaken by the firm With regards the econometric analysis, we measured the technological capacity of the firm in a previous time-period, in order to avoid the problems of causality inherent when using cross-sectional data

Looking at the important construction sector in India, this paper explores the internationalisation of firms in the service sector, the Malaysian construction firms to the India market Internationalisation is the process of leveraging domestic competencies into foreign markets and transferring competitive advantages based on such factors as superior technology and products The role played by the government agency, Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) which acts as a facilitator between Malaysian contractors bidding in India is crucial in the internationalisation process Malaysian contractors benefited from the physical development which had taken place in Malaysia, which is ahead of India The contracting firms themselves are ready to internationalise when commitment from top management is ever present

The recent advances in transport and communication coupled with the protocols of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) have given access to markets that were previously insulated These immigrants took with them their knowledge of construction that they employed in their new settlements, either as a hybrid with the local construction knowledge or supplanting the latter altogether As globalisation is an inescapable fact, firms based in both the newly industrialised countries (NICs) and least developed countries (LDCs) should adopt strategies that could enable them benefit from the open market All this indicates that it is only companies based in advanced industrialised countries (AICs) and a few from NIC that can venture into the international construction market The current wave of globalisation is a result of built strategic capabilities and the ease of movement of goods and services across borders, which was paved by fast and reliable communications systems as well as the pioneering work of Multinational Corporations (MNCs) The concern has been that with the WTO protocols in place can there be a fair play in the international construction industry? Several strands of research need to be carried out to enable firms from LCDs benefit from the inevitable globalisation of the construction industry

Australia has a small economy, remote from most developed markets and with a brief history of competitive product and factor markets (Merrett, 2007) This paper examines the ability of the Uppsala internationalization model and network theory to explain the behaviors of Australian AEC firms internationalizing to China This paper presents an enhanced perspective on internationalization, which responds to those omissions, by answering the research question: ‘What process do Australian AEC firms use when internationalizing to China, and what factors influence them at each stage?’ This research identified the process of internationalization for three Australian AEC firms establishing business in China Case studies were prepared from the experiences of an architectural firm, an engineering firm and a construction firm, and it was determined that network theory, in combination with the Uppsala internationalization theory model, explained many of the internationalization behaviors of these firms It was found that success in China, and the perception of future success, were motivators for further investment and internationalization in China. These findings suggest that network theory (Battilana & Casciaro, 2012) in combination with the Uppsala internationalization theory model (Johanson & Vahlne, 1977) can explain the internationalization behaviors of AEC firms

The global construction market in recent years has witnessed a fast expansion of Chinese international construction companiesCICCs Data from the Ministry of CommerceMOFCOMof China report that the international contracting revenue for all CICCs in 2006 reached an amount of $30 billion; international labor services revenue $5.37 billion; and international design and consultant of $330 million The research identifies SWOTs which are important in terms of sustaining the further development of CICCs This research informs that CICCs should develop their international competitiveness by taking advantage of their  strengthse.g ., low cost and labor, minimize  weaknessese.g ., by international management capacity, exploit  opportunitiese.g ., learning from other international construction giants by partnering, or neutralize  threatse.g ., by investing in talented people and advanced construction technology Global Insight Inc. suggested that the 55 countries with the largest construction markets spent $3.9 trillion on construction in 2004 ͑ Tulacz  2005͒. It projects that the overall world market for construction will grow by 2.6% in 2005 and show an average annual growth rate of 2.6% up to 2008 The SWOT analysis was conducted in a collective manner by treating CICCs as a whole; detailed analysis of SWOT analysis is necessary when a specific CICC is concerned

On January 11, 2007, Vietnam became the 150th member country of the World Trade  OrganizationWTO SWOT analysis of domestic A/E/C firms operating in Vietnam’s construction industry was carried out The 25 domestic and 12 foreign A/E/C firms operating in Vietnam’s construction industry agreed to be interviewed after much persuasion and follow-up telephone calls With the Vietnam’s construction industry opening to foreign firms, it is crucial for Vietnamese firms to understand their own strengths and weaknesses in competing with new foreign entrants, and recognize the opportunities and threats associated with its competitive environment The study reveals that foreign firms are perceived to be stronger than Vietnamese firms in terms of financial capacity, design and construction technology, project management ability, and experience in complex projects These are valuable to foreign firms who are considering venturing into Vietnam’s construction industry

China overseas contracted projects started at the end of 1970s and contributed to  china’s  foreign aid policy, becoming an important element of the country’s opening-up to the outside world Due to the limitation of available literature and studies related to Chinese constructors in Nigeria, this study was conducted by collecting relevant documents from various sources such as academic literature, government portals, company profiles, online magazines and newspapers etc When first entered Nigerian through the Chinese government aid to African countries, the increasing necessity to establish a permanent presence in overseas markets challenges the tradition of tide like market entry mode of Chinese international contractors (CICs) and confronts them with an important dichotomous selection between permanent entry mode and mobile entry mode This study revealed that China will overtake the US as the world’s biggest construction market by 2018, the fastest growth will happen in Nigeria Entering the market through the Chinese Government aid and using the oil for infrastructure policy, CICs has established a permanent entry mode and are not dependent on such policy to deepen their Nigerian market penetration. They have powerful comparative advantages, concerning price, risk appetite and, as we have seen, their access to huge credit lines. They are improving their quality and service all the time, eroding the main remaining comparative advantage enjoyed by their Western competitors and winning the major projects as discussed above It seems inevitable that CICs will continue to grow their Nigerian market and African market share as well as Nigeria and other Sub-Saharan countries will continue to grow as a market for Chinese constructors

Trading blocs in Europe, North America and possibly in East Asia promise economies of scale to be achieved with the lowering of trade barriers between member states Firms which view the world as a single operating platform operate as single entities. This symmetry stems from the natural consequence of adopting a global outlook as well as the quest for economies of scale and scope by engaging in unorthodox practices. 14 Economies of scope on the other hand are achieved when different parts of the organisation unite to enter new markets or expertise In order to upgrade their skills, firms from developing nations should make it their objective to eventually establish themselves in countries where the industrial, institutional and government facilities provide the means to generate competitive advantages for today as well as tomorrow Worldwide economies of scale and scope are achieved by making sure that the different operating units function together

The  international business domain is saturated with complex variables that may affect the firm’s performance if they are not well identified and effectively managed This study investigates the SWOT attributes relative to the international market expansion by Malaysian construction firms The quantitative methods based on descriptive statistics, such as ranking based on relative important index, mean, standard deviation and correlation analysis have further contributed to the body of knowledge in international market entry decisions Based on the experience and opinions from the respondents participated in this research, it can be concluded that the respective significant strength, weakness, opportunity and threat of the Malaysian firms related to international market expansion are attributed by the ability to produce good quality products/services, lack of research and development, mergers, and policies, laws and regulations of host country The study empirically has validated the relationship between the threat and opportunity attributes by suggesting a significant and strong positive correlation between both factors The study suggests that the international market expansion must involve considerations the counterbalance between the strength, weakness, opportunity and threat attributes for the firms’ survival and growth
