Mathematics and Numeracy can be found everywhere all around us and are important for everyone to use it in our daily lives. Mathematics gives students the ideas, knowledge and the skills that are essential for them whereas the numeracy use this knowledge to connect with their personal lives.  Although mathematic is more likely to be confronted in educational school whereas numeracy can be found mostly in the world around us and stay connected with our daily lives (Siemon et al., 2015, pp. 181–200).

Mother Nature Is a Math Geek Discover Magazine

Sunflowers are part of the mathematical phenomenon and have a Golden spiral seeds arrangement.  The patterns of seeds on the sunflower head follows the Fibonacci sequence, or 1,2,3,5,8,13 and so on…. The sunflower seeds can be seen as spreading toward the opposite direction and are produced at the centre of the head and stretching out toward the petals to fill all the outside space across the head staying in a certain position and angle to form a spiral pattern ( Heimbuch , 2020).

Chef use math concept and knowledge when cooking dishes or baking such as proportions and ratios to make the correct calculation for each ingredient of the recipe.  When using the method of a half or double of a recipe, the cook need to calculate how much is the 2/3 of flour in half or double to make sure to add the correct portion of the ingredients which involved fractions as the cup measurement are going to be a quarter, half or 2/3.    They also need to understand the concept of time for the recipe to make sure they turn out perfectly without getting burnt by setting up a timer.  According to Montague-Smith ( Mathematics in Nursery Education, 2002 cited in  Knaus , 2015) suggests that ‘to be able to measure is a life skill, and one that will be used in various contexts throughout life’.

Numeracy skills in everyday life:. Numeracy skills are being used in daily life, including budgeting, shopping, telling the time, planning trip, administering medicine, and reading and interpreting information etc ( Siemon et al., 2015, pp. 181–200)..

Paying, counting, and receiving the money

Time, Size of portion per serve, compute food cost

Time to take the medication, how many liter or dosage amount, expire or day to take medication etc.

Play is very crucial in children’s development (mental, social, language, physical, and emotional) and it allows children to explore more of their environment and allows them to use their imagination, and creativity as they learn to engage and interact the world around them through play ( Sherkow , 2004 as cited in Charles &  Bellinson , 2019, p.11).  Play is an activity or an experiences set up by the educator for children where they can freely explore the environment, draw out their imagination and decision making.

Play-based activity: Building Blocks. Block building are suitable for pre-school children aged 3-5 years old. Building blocks are effective play-based activity which helps children with their developments and boost their imagination, self-expression, mathematics, enhances children’s problem-solving abilities. Children get expose to all sort of different colours, shapes, sizes, and numbers while building blocks which further gives opportunity to children to explore concepts of mathematics including length, measurement, comparison, number, estimation, symmetry, and balance throughout building using blocks ( Kemple , 2015). Throughout this activity children social and mathematics skills are supported as they will interact with each other verbally and non-verbally to discuss the mathematical concept of how many blocks should be enough to build a building or how tall, big can they build. EYLF learning outcome 5.1 Children interact verbally and non-verbally with others for a range of purposes. EYLF learning outcome 4.4 Children resource their own learning through connecting with people, ad processes materials. (Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations [DEEWR], 2009, p.43)..
