Rojak is a salad dish of Javanese origin where it is called  rujak , commonly found in Malaysia, Indonesia,  and Singapore.

Rojak is one of the oldest dishes and the earliest historically identified food of ancient Java.

The true origin of the rojak recipe remains deeply unclear, but there lies a possibility that ever since ancient times, natives from the Malayan archipelago would normally eat sour-tasting seasonal tropical fruits.

The Javanese people serve rojak as an essential item during the pre-natal ceremonies where it is consumed by the mother to be and her female companions.

Mangarabar  is held after the harvesting season in Batak  Mandailing  of Indonesia where all the inmates of village join in preparing the dish which is then shared by the entire population of the village.

In Malaysia, rojak is also used as a colloquial expression for an eclectic mix, in particular as a word describing the multi-ethnic character of Malaysian society.
