[Audio] Culture and History Within Tamworth, NSW there is a rich history for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Being on Kamilaroi land history is shown throughout the region through rock paintings have been preserved across the region. The Kamilaroi Nation is one of the four largest Indigenous nations within Australia which has contributed greatly to Tamworth's history and community. The Gamilaraay language has contributed greatly to the unique naming of the places around the region which are still remaining today an example of this is Goonoo Goonoo which is a main road in Tamworth running alongside a creek. Goonoo Goonoo in the Gamilaraay language means running water over rocks in time of drought. The Gamilaraay language is now being taught in many primary schools across Tamworth which sees the culture and history of the Kamilaroi people passed down through generations..

[Audio] Impact on Cultural Factors Historical mistreatment, discrimination and cultural insensitivity has impacted the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities for many year. This has now led to a mistrust in community which may result in people being resistant to receive support or engage with a service. With this mistrust many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are not engaging with services which can result in poorer health and social outcomes..

[Audio] Impact on Relationships and communication Local communication practices can vary from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities. If these practices are not followed this can lead to misunderstandings, doubt within the community and can cause a breakdown in communication. Following the practices of your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Community can have a positive impact on the relationship with the community itself. Speaking with local elders to gain permission and guidance to speak with the community can lead to more positive interactions with our local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities..

Understanding and recognizing cultural differences when providing services and support people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities..

[Audio] Implementation and integration of cultural safety Cultural Competency Training for all staff members including within this having workshops, seminars and interactive sessions for all members of staff to engage in with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators. Inside this training we will include understanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture and recognizing unconscious bias. Culturally inclusive Policies and Procedures throughout the organization. Incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into the decision-making processes and program development when new programs are being developed. Ensuring that the policies and procedures respect and reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values and beliefs..

[Audio] Cultural Competency Training Strengths Skills Development for being able to interact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in a sensitive and appropriate manner Reflection is a great tool when completing training , reflecting on one's own cultural bias, assumptions and stereotypes Education and awareness providing essential knowledge to understand Indigenous culture and history Weakness Staff capacity to attend training and putting strain on the business if operating on low staff numbers Biases that have already been ingrained into someone's life may have no benefit from the Cultural Competency Training Limited exposure to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities resulting in limited understanding and cultural sensitive in training amongst staff.

[Audio] Enhancing Cultural Safety What can we do to enhance Cultural Safety at work? Being able to create a culture within the workplace that promotes Cultural Safety, understanding of Culture and continuous learning can be done through some of the following below: Within the workplace have a yaarning group where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have a safe space where they can speak about issues that may be presented with at work or cultural issues that they might be facing in the workplace. This group then is also able to asked questions relating to guidance, support and a safe space for any cultural safety questions or concerns. Implementing Cultural Safety audits and a channel for feedback to given on a regular basis. Being able to engage with staff members, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representatives whilst having these audits or receiving feedback allows for diverse insights and perspectives to be considered. Using that feedback from the audits and community feedback you are able to continue to develop and enhance cultural safety within the work place..

[Audio] Delivery of services and programs To support the delivery of services and programs to ensure that they are culturally safe and to encourage people to engage having a team member that is a designated cultural liaison to oversee the delivery of the different services and programs within the services Receiving feedback from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community who are having the programs and services delivered to ensure they are accurate and reflective of the culturally safe practices that the service has in place..

Having a designated cultural liaison will assist building relationships throughout the Community taking on feedback how the services and programs are being received. The cultural Liaison will be able to engage with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to demonstrate the business commitment to culturally safe services and programs. By integrating the strategies throughout this presentation and working collaboratively with The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities it will promote Cultural Safe, Self-Determination and provides the community with control over the services and programs They receive having a greater outcome for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples..
