Smart home security. A case study by Fawaz Akali.
Smart home security utilizes a collection of IoT-enabled products in order to allow users to remotely monitor and manage the security of their homes and themselves. In the last decade smart homes have grown exponentially in the real estate market and with this paradigm shift it is only expected to upgrade the security measures. The IoT security market is expected to grow from 8.2 billion in 2018 to 35.2 billion by 2023.

Advantages of Smart home security systems 24/7 monitoring Proactive real time alerts Low insurance rates Saving on utility bills.
Disadvantages and ethical issues. Security issues- app , wireless and integrated systems. Cost – expensive to set up Technology acceptance.
Legal issues. . In Doty v ADT LLC No. 20-cv-60972, 2020 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 245373 (S.D. Fla. Dec. 30, 2020), the court granted in part and denied in part a motion to dismiss a consumer’s class action lawsuit initiated by misconduct with her smart home system ( Garavaglia , 2021). The court protected the customers right to be free from invasion of privacy and then the company had to pay damages when it was the fault of the technician who installed the system. This case is one of very many examples of possible liability issues that may arise with this new technology.
Conclusion. Smart homes are largely regarded as new technology and the security in smart homes is a paradigm shift to the security system and industry. It comes with many advantages such as; real time alerts, remote access and increased safety. However, the costs, openness to threats and privacy risks pose a great hindrance to the progression and overall technology acceptance. In addition, smart home security is also reducing and almost eliminating the human factor in security systems rendering people jobless. However, when deciding on implementing or purchasing a smart home security system one must consider all options from cost (both principal and subscription), the software it supports, what devices it best supports and if one is a home renter or an owner. These are the factors one need to consider in smart home securities. Finally, this new technology has opened a plethora of possible liabilities and law suits, companies will need legal teams to protect them from liabilities and reduce possible damages..
