[Audio] Welcome to our pitch video, we are group future, consisting of six curious students who wants to make a difference
[Audio] Did you know that every year many people become ill or die due to unsafe food. Around 38% are children under five years old that are affected of it, and 53% are people living I low- and middle-income countries. This is something we want to act on now! We have the EatSafe program, which is a multi-country program funded by USAID to enable lasting improvements targeting food safety in traditional markets. In Nigeria the solution that have been developed is an inflatable tunnel solar dryer. The way The solar dryer works is that it will remove excess water in food, which results in reducing spoilage. The idea is that the solar dryer can be installed in different communities across Nigeria and therefore it will have the function to be adjusted to a wide range of foods. For now the target is to dry tomatoes, peppers, onions, and green leafy vegetables, but in the future it could expand to spices and tropical fruits. The challenge is to address Material Suitability for drying vegetables..
[Audio] By looking at the product, and the materials that have been used to construct it, our problem statement became: Is it a sustainable approach to replace the existing materials in the Solarflex? We want to know if there is another material that could replace the PVC. The reason for the material change is that PVC has a lot of health risks, which we wants to prevent..
[Audio] Our idea for a solution is to change the film. An alternative material is Polyurethane ( PUR) which is a newly developed thermoplastic, that is resistant to bad substances: such as chemicals and oils. Other than that, it is resistant to UV-light that can cause radiation, which can lead to severe diseases like cancer. Therefore, by replacing the plastics with the newly developed PUR it's expected to not only reduce spoilage but becoming more sustainable. On the right the prototype can be seen. The construction of the product is the same, but as seen the PUR have replaced the PVC, which is indicated by the arrow..
