This Syllabus provides you with an overview of the online short course objectives and modules and tests. This short course opens April 17, 2023 and closes May 22, 2023..

[Audio] Course Description The general objective of this short course is to help participants develop a basic understanding of farm management and production best practices. Specifically, this short course introduces new beginning farmers, ranchers, and veterans to basic farm fundamentals in crop and livestock production, farm and financial management, marketing strategies, food safety, and risk associated with farming..

[Audio] Pre-requisite: New, beginning farmers, ranchers and veterans in Mississippi who have not farmed consecutively for the last 10 years..

[Audio] Objective and Outcomes The objective of this short-course is To provide an online educational short course to new beginning farmers, ranchers, and veterans in Mississippi on basic farm fundamentals. The outcomes are as follows: Pre and Posttest scores of knowledge gain in key farm management and production practices. Participants' matriculation to Farm Business Plan Development..

[Audio] Canvas Account Canvas is a web-based learning management system (LMS). It is interactive and encourages learners to gain subject-matter knowledge through online learning materials, videos, chats and discussions. Participants are encouraged to engage through chats and group discussions. Alcorn State University's Center for Information Technology Services (CITS) provides oversight of this platform, and instructions for navigating Canvas. You can find instructions on navigating Canvas by clicking on the purple YouTube link or You can go to "Pages" on the left menu of your Canvas classroom to view the PDF instructions for navigating Canvas..

[Audio] The next 9 slides provides an overview of the sections of your Canvas classroom. Home Tab This is your Home Tab, which gives you a "bird's eye" view of the modules..

[Audio] Announcements Tab This is your Announcements Tab, where you view messages from your facilitators and peers..

[Audio] Discussions Tab This is your Discussions Tab, where you can interact with peers and discuss plans, ideas, etc..

[Audio] Grades Tab This is your Grades Tab where you can view your test results..

[Audio] Pages Tab This is your Pages Tab where you can view handouts and access forms..

[Audio] Syllabus Tab This is your Syllabus Tab which you are currently viewing, and details topics and presenters..

[Audio] Quizzes Tab This is your Quizzes Tab which lists all assessments. Your quizzes are 5 questions, and each correct answer is worth 20 points for a total of 100 points..

[Audio] Modules Tab This is your Modules Tab where you navigate videos, presentations, and assessments. Note: You cannot move to the next module until you complete the previous one. You cannot move to the next module until you complete the previous one..

[Audio] Chat Tab This is your Chat Tab where you participate or schedule live chats with facilitators or peers..

[Audio] Coursework You must complete all 5 Modules and corresponding pre-test at the beginning of the module and post-test at the end of the module. You can work at your own pace, but the goal is to complete all modules by May 19, 2023. REMINDER You will not be able to move to a new module until you have completed the previous module..

[Audio] Assessment The pre-tests and post-test are required for evaluation purposes ONLY. Each module will have the same questions for both pre and post-tests. Each test is based on the videos and presentations. This table shows the description, number of test, points each, total possible points for each test category and percentage points for each test category..

[Audio] Modules This diagram is a summary of topics covered in each module. These topics are based on those covered in Year 1 which were conducted virtually only, in-person, and hybrid.
