[Audio] So why is career guidance so important? There are many students as well as employed professionals with no clear career direction. The main cause for this is a lack of career guidance as well as limited knowledge regarding future careers, other institutions of learning, various courses universities or colleges can offer and possible opportunities for example internships or job shadowing. Most students believe that the university or a degree is the only option and most tend to choose common careers such as a Doctor, Lawyer and Teacher or are pushed into a career which is likely to lead to drop outs, high failure rate and negative attitudes. Choosing a career is a very important decision one can make. A person spends approximately 86 400 hours of their lives within a job, so why not choose a career that will make you happy but also productive? The process of choosing a career is detailed and includes an individual's knowledge, interests, values, likes, dislikes, abilities, skills, strengths, weaknesses, the job market, institutions and much more. Good career guidance assessments is able to eliminate the confusion and has been proven over and over again to be valid and reliable. Only if these assessments are done honestly and to the best of one's ability. According to the South African Institute of race relations, only 50% of South Africa's youth are employed. This includes many school leavers with matric and tertiary qualifications. Therefore half of the country's youth are unemployed and are unlikely to find work because of SA's current economic difficulty. Every year, there is a large number of matrics as well as graduates whom have no idea what to study or in what career path they should follow. Many South Africans never had the opportunity to gain career advice to make informed career choices. And it is important that people understand themselves better and research the job market and the opportunities available before making a choice..
