What is Mass Incarceration. - The United States has the largest prison population in the world and one of the highest incarceration rate. - The United States spends over $80 billion on incarceration each year. - There are twice as many people incarcerated in local jails awaiting trial and presumed innocent than in the entire federal prison system. (American Civil Liberties Union, 2022). - Mandatory minimum sentencing plays a huge role on mass incarceration as it results in an increase in incarceration for people of color, an increase in social breakdown and corruption in poor inner-city neighborhoods. - Plea Deal - Public defenders and Lawyers.

Myths. - crime has fallen because incarceration has risen - we need prisons to keep us safe - People of color commit more crimes.

Racial discrimination and Recidivism. African American males are incarcerated at an overall rate of almost seven times more than of white males.” (Johnson, 2012). Black Americans are incarcerated in state prisons at nearly 5 times the rate of white Americans. Latinx Americans are incarcerated at 1.3 times the rate of white Americans. (Nellis et al., 2021) Research shows that recidivism rates in the United States are about 60 percent. (Johnson, 2012)..
