1. Why does social change and activism need to 
take place under a democratic government?

• Sir Bernard Rowland Crick was a British political scientist in which he wrote an

influential book in London by the name of In Defence of Politics (1962). Crick 
believes democracy is a threat to society, in the sense that democracy is too 
‘’vague and imprecise’’(p.51), in which case it may destabilise society. ‘’She is 
everybody's mistress and yet somehow retains her magic …Indeed, even amid our 
pain at being denied her exclusive fidelity, we are proud of her adaptability to all 
sorts of circumstances, to all sorts of company.’’ (p.51).

• The metaphor portrays Crick’s view on democracy, how it serves individuals and

society but holds equivalent value to a mistress because it is tolerant to everything 
in which case democracy stands for nothing. Although this is the case, social 
change and activism still needs to take place because a group or a community 
holding too much power or freedom to choose will clash with other minority 
groups. For instance the movement to ban the hijab. A democratic government can 
become ironically oppressive.

• Democracy alone plants the seeds for society to grow with individuals that may

not be safe from one’s pursuit of beliefs coupled with the refusal to oppose 
popular pursuits or not being able to privately process, free of societal pressures. 
Like Crick said, ‘’For, quite simply, it allows no refuge and no contradiction, no 
private apathy even.’’ (p.56). These are all factors that contribute to the destruction 
of a stable society and the evolution of social change and activism.

• Women in the 18th century planted the seeds of the feminist movement as a result

of being subject to oppression in society. Women were victims to sexual violence, 
no right to property or education, in essence they did not have the same 
opportunities that men were allowed to exercise.

• Although as the second and third wave started to take place, gradually feminism

introduced rights that were anti-family. First we have to understand that a family is 
the first unit that builds a functional society. If the basic building blocks are in 
danger there's nothing really to build. Sheila Cronin, a radical feminist leader 
stated, ‘’Since marriage constitutes slavery for women, it is clear that the women's 
movement must concentrate on attacking this institution, freedom of women 
cannot be won without the abolition of marriage.’’ Here we can see that marriage 
is an area of oppression in the feminist movement

• Another factor in the feminist movement is abortion, Margaret Sanger, Founder of

planned parenthood, leading the parade in abortion, “The most merciful thing a 
large family can do to one of its infant members is kill it”. Women are being told 
their role as a woman is an act of slavery, children are being indoctrinated by 
schools instead of their parents, and men are being demonised in familial 
relationships.

• Over the years, divorce rates, mental health, suicide rates for men and teen

pregnancy has increased. This is not entirely due to feminism but I do believe 
these societal problems arise from an unstable family.

• The idea of the hijab ban in the West and European countries was a movement

supposedly to free women of oppression, forcing them to take off the hijab is seen 
as liberation. For example the anti- islam propaganda, they portrayed people with 
the hijab on and called it oppression.

• The idea of nudity and owning one's sexual entertainments is being more open and

welcome to accessibility. If you believe that a lack of privacy is a loss of freedom, 
the movements that were taking place contradicts itself entirely. In essence a 
female's body traditionally was exclusive to her husband, a body of privacy was 
created and taking part of that away because of the ideology that exposing one’s 
body is true freedom is a paradox.
