Causes for Weight Gain and Obesity. In its most basic form, weight gain is due to a higher intake of calories with respect to the number of calories used for physical activity. This is a process that is quicker for some than others. Some people gain weight at a higher pace than others as will be explained in the next few slides. Diet is the source of calories, and the higher the calories the more physical activity one must expend to “burn” through the calories. Decreased physical activity increases the incidence of weigh gain, as the intake of calories outpaces the output of physical activity..

Environmental Causes for Weigh Gain. Lack of sidewalks, and walking areas, parks, trails may discourage a person from walking to and from nearby areas, and perhaps from walking for leisure (Centers for Disease Control, 2021) Lack of nearby gyms can discourage one from exercising routinely (Centers for Disease Control, 2021).

Genetic Causes for Weight Gain. Bardet-Biedl Syndrome Prader-Willi Syndrome Genes are not the only determinant factor when it comes to obesity, however they increase the susceptibility to obesity Multiple genes and environmental factors, poor diet and low physical activity ultimately cause obesity (Centers for Disease Control, 2021).

Disease and Drug Causes for Weight Gain. Cushing’s disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, and hypothyroidism can cause obesity if not managed properly Corticosteroids and some antidepressants can cause weight gain (Centers for Disease Control, 2021).

Ways to Reduce and Maintain a Healthy Weight. The two easiest ways to deal with any kind of weight gain is by diet and exercise A healthy diet that is high in vitamins and minerals and low in calories will make weight loss easier. High calorie and low nutrient dense foods might be less expensive but cost more in healthcare costs in the long-term Avoiding fast foods, processed foods, chips, and soda are a start Doing a simple web search can lead to many results and options for healthy weight-loss diets. Make sure to double check with a knowledgeable source, such as a doctor or a dietitian (MAYO CLINIC, 2021)..

Comoribidities of Overweight and Obesity. Type 2 diabetes Insulin resistance Glucose intolerance Hypertension Hyperlipidemia Gallbladder disease Coronary artery disease Heart failure Stroke Menstrual irregularities Certain types of cancer Hyperuricemia (Pi- Sunyer , 1999).

Evaluation. 1. In total, s tate five causes for weight gain and obesity 2. In total, state five daily physical routines for weight loss and maintenance of a healthy weight 3. In total, identify five comorbidities related to obesity 4. Score yourself on a score of 0-15 based on the number of answers..
