Adaptive life cycles are iterative and incremental methods used to respond to high levels of change and ongoing stakeholder involvement. Iterations are rapid and fixed in time and cost, and the overall scope of the project is decomposed into a product backlog. At the end of each iteration, the product should be ready for review by the customer. Adaptive methods are preferred when dealing with a rapidly changing environment, difficult requirements, and small incremental improvements. Project life cycles range from plan-driven to change-driven. Plan-driven projects have predictive life cycles, while change-driven projects use iterative, incremental, or adaptive life cycles. Incremental and iterative life cycles involve early planning of high-level scope, while adaptive life cycles involve fixed time and cost, and scope is broadly defined with the understanding that it will be refined as the project progresses. Backlogs are documented and prioritized, which can be adjusted as the project progresses..
