Laughter is part of everyday human communication. We can hardly think of a day in our lives that passes without us laughing or hearing someone laugh. Research has shown that human beings are capable of laughing even before they are born. Indeed pictures have shown unborn babies smiling in their mother’s wombs..

Laughter is part of everyday human communication. We can hardly think of a day in our lives that passes without us laughing or hearing someone laugh. Research has shown that human beings are capable of laughing even before they are born. Indeed pictures have shown unborn babies smiling in their mother’s wombs.

Smiling can be thought of as the first sign of laughter.

Humans are not the only creatures capable of laughing. It is known that chimpanzees and gorillas also make sounds and facial expressions that resemble those made by humans while laughing. The major difference however is that whereas human beings can laugh at jokes, it is doubtful because animals can see the funny side of life. It should, however, be noted that laughter is not always an expression of happiness.  Sometimes we laugh to cover up embarrassment or hide our fears. We may laugh to indicate annoyance.
