HISTORY. N P O ( non-profit organization - NPO) Lighthouse Children `s Cent er was founded in January 2001 in Tallinn. First idea was to help “ streetchildren “. After working 1 year in Apteegi street the old town of Tallinn , the C hildren `s C enter moved closer to the target group and started to work in Northern Tallinn. The Lighthouse C enter rents a 2-floor building from the Tallinn City Government. Service is provided in the area of city where poverty is the greatest..

North Tallinn. This is the area where most of the city's social housing units and overnight shelters are located. Accommodations take in those Tallinn citizens, who have lost their homes and are facing financial difficulties. This kind of accommodation, due to the presence of the North Tallinn accumulated risk groups, includes people living there, and the kids need special help in order not to live the same life in the future as their parents..

ABOUT US. N P O ( non-profit organization - NPO ) Lighthouse Children Center `s is a children day center for 7-17 year old s, Estonian and Russian - speaking schoolchildren at risk who live in the northern part of Tallinn. We work with children from unstable family situations. Children are referred by social workers. Today we have 25 kids , who use the day care service almost every day. Our workers and volunteers help the children to do their school homework, organize activities, attend camps and learn handicraft s , music , etc . We also teach social skills and promote healt h y lifestyle s . The Lighthous Center offers food, clothing, school and hygiene supplies for the kids..

CHILDREN CENTER LIGHTHOUSE AS SOCIAL SERVICE PROVIDER. Mission : NPO Lighthouse Children`s Center supports the development of children from deprived families and enables a safe environment for free time activities. Vision :All children of the Children`s Centre finish comprehensive school, attend at least one hobby group, and are aware of healthy choices and traditional Christian values. The Children`s Center has a significant influence on children`s coping with problems in their adult life ..

WHY SERVICE IS NEEDED?. Family situations : Poverty Alcohol dependency Low social skills Low motivation to model independently.

CHANGING FUTURE OF CHILDREN. To prevent poverty over the generations (poverty feeds poverty) To prevent separation of children from their parents (children`s homes and foster families) To protect children from crimes as victims or perpetrators (high risk for children who spend time on the streets) To enable a better/equal start to adult life compared to other children.

FINANCING. About 50% of elementary costs per month come from the Tallinn City Government. Covering all other costs depends on donations..

TODAY. Children Centre has improved our children`s academic success. This will help them to acquire future education and get a job. Hot food, clean clothes, a loving attitude by staff, recognition and support contribute to our children's well being and self-esteem. Most of their homes are lacking in these values..
