NO TREATIES Awka is one of the oldest settlements in Igboland, established at the center of Nri civilization, the city produced the earliest documented bronze works in sub-Saharan Africa in 800A.D. The earliest settlers were the Ifiteana people, who were renowned farmers, hunters and iron benders. Awka comprises of seven Igbo groups sharing common blood lineage and divided into two sections of 33 villages with a population of about 500,000. Awka and its culture is significate to me because its my place of birth, I am engrossed with the beauty of my culture and its diversity and its richness. It reminds me of my childhood and the joy I had looking forward to the yearly activities. Farm products stored here never goes bad and can be stored for ages. Some communities in Awka still use this ancient barn. The Treaty established Peace and Friendship between the British crown and the 24 indigenous nations. They were assured the protection of their lands and the right to self-governance. The symbol of the treaty was the exchange of Wampum belt, which is a symbol of agreement and trust. The treaty was negotiated and signed at Fort Niagara located near the present day Niagara. There are four local first nations- Hatiwendaronk , Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe andThe Mississaugas . Niagara significant to me because it’s the first Tourist place I visited in Canada and wish to go back again there again. This organization is responsible for the orientation and education, self- sufficiency and capacity building of the people. It upholds the culture, values, language and tradition of the people and other formal education.(Anishinabek educational institute,2018).
