History. Inulin is polysaccharide dietary fiber which was discovered by Velantin Rose in 1879. Initially it was obtained from lunula helenium root by boiling water extraction..

In 1920, Irvine use chemical methods to study its structure.

In 1980 crystal structure was investigated by Bleha and Revol.They reported it a five fold helix.

Introduction. Inulin belongs to class of fructans..

Inulin is a linear chain polymer of D fructose joined by β(2-1) glycosidic bond and terminated with a D glucose molecule to fructose by α(1-2) glycosidic bond as in sucrose.

Inulin founds in many types of fruits,vegetables,root and rhizome and in almost 36,000 of species and attain GRAS status in USA.

Inulin is water soluble and plant inulin contains 2-70 fructose units or sometimes as 200. But molecule with less than 10 units called fructo-oligosaccharides.

Inulin and oligofructose as “Novel” dietary fibers might have significant consequences on nutrition labeling system.

Sources of Inulin. It is estimated that Inulin occurs in around 36,000 species of plants..

Natural sources of Inulin include banana, barley, chicory, garlic, globe artichoke, Jerusalem artichoke, leak, onion and wheat, etc.

A total of 154 school children aged medium 7 years old were recruited from the areas of Scotland.

Diet intake was recorded using one 24 hour recall.

For the assessment of Inulin a list of food was created using food composition data reporting on inulin type fructan content. The amount of inulin from reported homemade and takeaway food was calculated using the mean ingredients of this recopies. Nutritics software was need to check for standard portions.

Grain and cereal products contributed over half the inulin intake (58.5%) whereas bread (36.5%) accounted for about a third followed by breakfast cereal and biscuits,

The second highest contributing food group was takeaway and homemade dishes which accounts for 21.7 % of inulin consumption including vegetable dishes with 9%. The vegetables potato, beans, and fruit food group contributed the least amount of inulin with 11.9% and 8% respectively.

Inulin Clearance. Inulin Clearance is a procedure by which filtering capacity of glomeruli is determined by measuring the rate at which inulin is cleared from blood plasma..

GFR is directly measured by clearance of exogenous filtration markers like inulin or by clearance of exogenous markers like creatinine.

Inulin is more specific and accurate substance to measure GFR.

Clinically creatinine clearance is more widely used than inulin clearance for estimating GFR.
