Technology is the application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life or, as it is sometimes phrased, to the change and manipulation of the human environment. As technology in healthcare has evolved so has technology’s role in nursing education. Nursing students can now have access to online education, live and web-based simulations, apps, reference guides and electronic textbooks right at their fingertips. It helps us change the way we do things and as a result, its impact on nursing education affords students the opportunity to show improvement in clinical skills through confidence in decision making and critical reasoning.  The impact of computer technology and the internet on nursing education includes:  information, evidence based education & practice, accessibility, social equity, the quality of care, financial pressure in addition to other disadvantages.

Information , it is virtually everywhere and technology has literally put it in the palm of our hands.   The internet is a major network that connects computers from all over the world so, anyone with a computer and internet access is able to retrieve information on the internet.  It gives us access to an abundance of information about diseases, care plans, medication and many more thereby creating smarter nurses. A student can be on the ward and encounter a medication she has no knowledge on. This student can simply take her phone and google the name of the medication and everything that is related to the medication will be right there at her fingertips.

Evidence-based education  is a distinct set of concepts by which education stakeholders use empirical evidence to make educated decisions about education interventions such as policies, practices, or even programs. “Evidence based” decision making is highly preferred over “opinion based” decision making. Evidence based education consists of four aspects: 1.    Promoting research and development that are of the best-practices  2.    Encouraging scientific research review and evaluation 3.    Disbursing scientific research 4.    Giving support and facilitating the development of the “evidence-based culture”

This began with the one and only Florence Nightingale who was a pioneer of evidence based practice  in the 1800s and kept evolving within the medical community.  Evidence based practice is vital to undergraduate and graduate students.  Technology is perceived to be a key component in evidenced based practice as it helps it develop. Evidence based practice is deemed to be a combination of clinical expertise, evidence and patient’s perspectives. Components of EBP include:  Clinical expertise Evidence Patient's perspective

Technology ACCESSIBILITY refers to tools that can be successfully used by persons of all expertise and limitations. When technology is readily available, each user can interact with it in the manner that best suits him or her. Accessible technology is immediately accessible. Technology has allowed students via the world wide web a chance to now study and interact virtually, making it more cost effective and accommodating especially now with the COVID-19 Pandemic. Assistive Technology can be surfed easily by individuals with visual impairments using a screen reader smartphone with a built-in screen reader.  Technology can be crucial in generating considerable productivity gains. Technology can be integrated into classrooms with digital learning tools, such as computers and hand-held devices, to support both teaching and learning. Technology can be used to fuel learning in a variety of ways, including electronic grade books, digital portfolios, learning games and real-time feedback on teacher and student performance.

Having the internet has also allowed for  social equity. The same educational opportunities were provided to all, which strengthened feelings of humanity and understanding as well as better relations among students and teachers. With the technology implemented, students are given the opportunity to study in an environment that improves self-awareness, supports better understanding of educational subjects and promotes virtual beings.

The quality of caring is intrinsic to nursing.  According to WHO, quality of care is the extent to which health related services for individuals as well as populations expand the possibility of desired health conclusions. Its foundation has a lot to do with evidence based professional knowledge and is key in attaining universal health coverage. It's unfortunate but much of society is actually lacking the ability to feel empathy and technology is partially responsible.  When we communicate through online forums instead of face to face, many of the neurological keys to feeling empathy are missing from the exchange thereby decreasing quality of care

Financial pressure  with the implementation of advanced technology within institutions is another example of the ills of technology introduction. Expenses would occur in purchasing, repairing and operations. This can add economic stress in nursing education causing an increase in tuition fees for students who may already be under monetary strain.

Disadvantages. Disadvantages of having technological resources are not only based on accessibility and financial pressure but lies on the information that is there on the internet to be accessed. Even though information is right at our fingertips, some of the data that is available is not proven or factual, leading to confusion and misinformation during studies. It is up to us as student nurses to look thoroughly at the information that we are obtaining and ensure that it is credible. Another disadvantage that has come to my attention is patients and their family members use the same technology and information presented online and self diagnose themselves, sometimes putting themselves and their family in a state of worry. It is up to us as the professional to educate and guide them on how to use the information given so they will not overthink and also scare themselves..

CONCLUSION. To say that technology and the internet has had an impact on Nursing Education, then this can be stated as a factual statement.
