Chapter 8: The Blood and Lymphatic Systems – Hematology and Immunology.
Blood and the Lymphatic system. A close up of a plant.
THE THREE TYPES OF BLOOD CELLS. Erythrocytes. Erythrocytes (red blood cells) are responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body and removing waste..
THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM. 4. Smlphatlc d T hyrnus Splæn intestinal. and lymph Inguhal Popliteal lymph nodes Lymp vessels.
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM OVERVIEW. Lymph nodes. Tonsils. Filters foreign subjects such as diseased cells and cancerous cells..
Experimental Studies on the Spread of Cancer in the Lymphatic System.
Experiment Overview. The overall goal of the experiment was to observe how cancer cells spread through the lymphatic system. Rabits were used for this experiment due to the fact that satisfactory transplantable tumors were available. The rabbits were then injected with a dye to track the growth of the cancer cells within the lymphatic system..
Results. Cancer cells injected into the lymph nodes only spread after considerable growth. Tumors injected into the lymph nodes do not spread for at least 3 weeks in all of the test subjects. All tumor cells in affected lymphatics are arrested in the sinuses or one or lobules in the corresponding lymph node..
Anemia. 9. (prefix) an – no (root) emia – blood condition Ah-NEE-mee-ah reduction of red blood cells noticed by the patient as weakness and fatigue.

Splenalgia. 14. (root) splen – spleen (suffix) algia – pain Splee -NAL- jee -ah Pain in the spleen.
Elliptocytosis. 15. (root) ellipto – oval shaped (suffix) cyte – cell Ee -LIP- toh -SAIT Oval red blood cells.
Embolism. 16. (root) embol – embolus (suffix) ism – condition EM- boh - lizm Blockage in a blood vessel caused by an embolus.
