The  PIN  (Postal Index Number) System was First Introduced on  Jan 15th, 1972  by  Shriram  Bhikaji  Velankar,  then additional Secretary  in the union ministry of Communications  and a Senior Member of the posts and Telegraph  Bo ard .

According to the Department of Posts, There were  23,344 Post Offices ,  Prim arily   in Urban areas, in India at the time of Independence. But the Country's Population was growing Rapidly, and the postal network had to keep pace. The System was meant to  simplify Manual Sorting and delivery of mail by eliminating confusion over incorrect addresses ,Similar  Place Names & Different Languages used by the Public .
