Page 2 (9s)

Background. Facebook is free to sign up, most of the money is made through advertisements. When users sign up for Facebook, they agree to the terms and conditions which includes Facebooks right to access the user’s demographic information Over the years the platform has been criticised due to their user privacy, so much so that on 31 May 2010 there was an online event called Quit Facebook Day. Only 47% of users trust the platform due to its bad reputation. My team and I will work together to assist in a recent data breach and recovery strategy to ensure that user’s privacy is seen as a top priority for Facebook to the public..

Summary of Facebook. Facebook is a social media platform founded by a group of Harvard university students, Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes, and Eduardo Saverin in 2004. Owned by Meta platforms, Facebook has over 2.9 million monthly users. Initially Facebook was used by Harvard students to post pictures of themselves and judge each other’s attractiveness. It grew quickly and expanded into other universities. As more social media aspects were added to the platform, Facebook grew and by 2004 had 1 million users. From there Facebook exploded in popularity and quickly became a huge success. To this day Facebook is one of the biggest social media platforms in the world. It is used worldwide because of several capabilities, one of which being the ability to create an online profile that is easily accessible and viewable to the public, the second is the ability to connect with people you identify with and the third is the ability to view and track other people’s profiles..

Facebooks Problems from the past. Another huge breach of user security done by Facebook was a glitch caused by a bug that published 14 million users' private posts. Facebooks privacy officer, Ellie Egan came out to the public and apologized for the error and said the issue had been fixed. While Mark Zuckerberg continues to promise its users that security will be increased and improved on the app, he still remains to face ongoing allegations. In a September security breach, hackers were able to gain access and thieve personal data from an estimate of 30 million Facebook accounts..

User privacy. Zuckerberg's nonstop false reassurances to prevent security breaches is damaging the reputation of the company, as he repeatedly fails to fulfil his promises. This has led to many of his social media users concerned about having their private information and data stolen. It forces users to rethink their trust in the app, and the way it deals with protection of private data. Due to the magnitude of Facebook, any issues that arise with the website are given immense publicity to, which damages the company’s reputation and relationship with its millions of users..

Recommendations improving USER PRIVACY. One of the first things Facebook should do is establish a quick-response security team. Although the company currently has security teams in place, it needs to design a team of top-notch professionals that are constantly sniffing out issues across the social network, working twenty-four-seven to latch on to any newly created issues and nip them in the bud instantly so the problem does not have time to grow bigger. These problems such as searching for phishing scams and for malware that has found its way onto the site need instant attention as if appearing an issue, they cannot be given time to grow..

Recommendations improving user privacy. Phishing is a type of online scam that targets consumers by sending them an e-mail, invoice, phone call or many more types of contact that appears to be from a well-known source – an internet service provider, a bank, or a mortgage company, for example. It asks the consumer to provide personal identifying information. Malware is the collective name for a number of malicious software variants, including viruses, ransomware and spyware. Shorthand for malicious software, malware typically consists of code developed by cyberattackers , designed to cause extensive damage to data and systems or to gain unauthorized access to a network..

Recommendations improving user privacy. Secondly, creating a strong user password will go a long way to preventing any breaches of user privacy. The key aspects of a strong password are length; a mix of letters both upper and lower case, numbers, and symbols, no ties to your personal information, and no dictionary words. Facebook currently doesn’t allow you to use one short word as your password. It will appear beside the section as ‘password not strong enough’. The implementation of the above being requirements for all users instead of suggestions will massively improve any breaches to personal accounts. This along with the use of the CAPTCHA test which is technology that authenticates that a real person is accessing the web content to block spammers and bots that try to automatically harvest email addresses or try to automatically sign up for access to websites, blogs or forums. CAPTCHA blocks automated systems, which can't read the distorted letters in the graphic..

Recommendations of user privacy. Finally, ID checks would secure two different problems that could be occurring. Firstly, it would remove any underage activity. . Secondly, it would abolish the term ‘Catfishing’. Catfishing is when someone sets up a fake online profile to trick people who are looking for love, usually to get money out of them. This would prevent any false identification with people trying to steal money off other people allowing them to believe they were someone else..

Best recommendation to improve Facebook. As a team we decided that the best recommendation to address Facebooks lack of user privacy and to increase Facebooks users trust in their data security measures was to develop a quick-response security team. The team felt that users would be more likely to trust Facebook with their data, if Facebook had a dedicated team of employees whose primary responsibility was to prevent their data from being stolen. Users will also feel safer when using Facebook knowing that there is a team of highly skilled specialists that are continually searching for malware and phishing scams that have made their way onto the site and deleting them before they have time to impact users..

Deciding on the best recommendation. The team thought the best way to determine which was the most effective of the 3 recommendations for Facebook was to hold a meeting of the whole team to discuss each recommendation in detail. The first thing that the team did in the meeting was that they broke down each of the recommendations and discussed how each of recommendations could be implemented..
