Introduction. Glass is an essential element in the field of engineering, owing to its wide use in buildings and infrastructures. Glass comes in various types and have different characteristics, which is why it’s important to explore these differences and understand how it plays a role in engineering..

-Invented by Pilkington in 1959. Typical batch mix will contain the following “ingredients” : 1. Silica 2. Soda ash 3. Limestone - U-Value: A measure of the heat gain or loss through glass due to the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures. The lower the number the better the performance..

Glass Types. A. Clear Glass: Clear float glass is a colorless and transparent type of glass which provides a high degree of light transmittance and optical clarity. Characteristics: 1. High light transmission 2. High optical clarity 3. Poor heat insulator 4. Can be further fabricated into reflective, low-E, laminated, shaped, curved, and ceramic painted glass.

Glass Types. B. Tinted Glass: Tinted glass is also produced on the float line by adding certain quantities of metal oxides to the traditional clear glass “ingredients”. Characteristics: 1. Range of colors for exterior appearance 2. Reduced light transmission compared to clear glass 3. Reduced solar heat gain.

Glass Types. C. Laminated Glass: It involves permanently bonding two or more pieces of glass with layers of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer, under heat and pressure, to create a single construction Characteristics: 1. Safety: The bond between the glass and interlayer strengthens the unit 2. Security: Even if the glass breaks, the interlayer will resist penetration of the unit 3. UV elimination (Protects furniture from fading) 4. Better Acoustical performance (Sound Insulation).

Glass Types. D. Coated Glass: Metallic coatings are sometimes applied to the glass surface in order to enhance performance and external appearance..
