[Audio] Canine gangliosidosis is a rare genetic disorder in which a dog lacks a necessary enzyme to break down worn out gangliosides. Gangliosides are complex molecules in the brain's cell membranes and they are important for brain cell communication. When these gangliosides get worn out, they are sent to the cell's lysosome. In an unaffected dog, the enzymes in the lysosome break down the gangliosides and reuse the parts. In a dog with gangliosidosis, an enzyme is missing and the lysosome is unable to break down the gangliosides, resulting in them accumulating or piling up in the lysosome. It is a progressive disease, meaning it gets worse as the build-up grows. A dog with gangliosidosis will display mental dullness, a lack of coordination, behavioral changes, head shaking when eating, blindness, deafness, and seizures. There is no cure or treatment so as the dog's condition worsens and they become weaker, their quality of life decreases until euthanasia is considered the most human option..
