Originally, the French royal family which consisted of King Louis the XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette and their immediate family were scheduled to escape Paris to Montmedy , a fortress near the German border garrisoned by royalist troops. King Louis himself had spoken to the peasants and the postmaster of Sainte- Menehould , Jean-Baptiste Droute had recognised the King from his portrait on the assignat in his possession. The carriage was stopped in Varennes and the family was arrested 50km away from Montmedy their intended destination..

Repercussions to Europe. Because of the flight to Varennes, many other European monarchs were alarmed by the failed escape attempt, most of them were scared that the ideas of revolution would spread to their own nations as well. France's relationships with its neighbouring nations such as Austria had further deteriorated as foreign governments called for war against the revolution. The death of King Louis XVI would spark a new age of France and much more bloodshed in the future all across Europe.
