[Audio] DEFINING THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY There are numerous definitions for the environment and sustainability but common ones are: Environment: The surroundings in which an organization operates, including air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna, humans and their interrelationships. ' Surroundings' can extend from within an organization to the local, regional and global system. 'Surroundings' can be described in terms of biodiversity, ecosystems, climate or other characteristics. Sustainability: Ability to meet the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their "own needs". It is a balance of economic, social and environmental needs..

[Audio] WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARED Environmental education and awareness is increasingly being promoted as a tool in managing our environment. In the 20th century serious environmental concerns like pollution, climate change, biodiversity, etc. have triggered great concern about the relationship between humanity and the environment In 19 78 UNESCO Tbilisi Declaration, mentioned the need for environmental education. This Declaration Convention defined environmental education as "a process of developing a world population that is aware of and concerned about the total environment and its associated problems, and which has the knowledge, skills, attitudes, motivation and commitment to work individually and collectively towards solution of current problems and the prevention of new ones". The legislation 401-IIQ on ecological education and education of the population was enacted by Azerbaijan Republic on December 10, 2002..

[Audio] WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARED The key reasons why it is necessary to incorporate environmental awareness into the daily realities: To maintain respect for nature: environmental awareness enables individuals to understand why it is necessary to respect nature and natural resources, and consequently how to reap from the benefits that nature provides. To give us understanding on how our behavior impacts the environment and committing to making changes to improve our environment and ensure that our behavior contributes to its sustainability..

Page 6 (3m 21s)

[Audio] ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS The environmental impact is defined as any change to the environment, whether adverse or beneficial, resulting from a facility's activities, products, or services. In other words it is the effect that people's actions have on the environment. Negative Impacts: The primary impacts of concern in an energy dependent society often come because of our energy use. Burning hydrocarbons like coal and oil to provide us with useful energy results in the emission of carbon dioxide and other detrimental pollutants. The impacts that these have on the environment have become clear and include: Climate change including Global warming Acid rain, photochemical smog and other forms of pollution Ocean acidification Displacement/ extinction of wildlife Resource depletion - forests, water, food and more.

Page 7 (4m 26s)

[Audio] GLOBAL ENVIRONEMNTAL CONCERNS There are 5 key environmental issues that affect all of us: Climate Change The rise in mean global temperature caused by the release of heat trapping gases. Scientists predict that this will result in an increase in 'extreme' weather events leading to flooding, droughts and the melting of sea ice. Resource depletion When natural resources are used at a higher rate than they can be replenished. The Earth has a finite set of resources that support our way of life including: gas, oil coal, trees, water, soil and plants. Loss of Biodiversity A reduction in the number and variety of animal and plant species on Earth. Human life depends on diversity within ecosystems, both within and between species. Statutory Nuisances Activities that might be prejudicial (damaging) to people's health or interfere with a person's legitimate use or enjoyment of his/her property. These can include: dust, noise, smells, piles of rubbish and emissions of smoke and fumes. Pollution The release of substances that cause harm to humans, property and the environment. Pollution can be to air, land or water..

[Audio] ENVIRONEMNTAL IMPACTS Environmental impacts can occur on different scales: local, regional/national and global level as can be seen in the diagram..

Page 9 (6m 18s)

[Audio] ENVIRONMENTAL SUCCESS Global - The Ozone Layer The hole in the ozone layer – a decrease of stratospheric ozone – was first reported in 19 74 and linked to the increasing presence of a class of man-made compound called chlorofluorocarbons ( CFCs). The Montreal Protocol ( 19 87) was introduced to regulate and phase out the production of CFCs. Since this came into force, the thinned area has stopped getting bigger and may even close over the Antarctic by 2050. The fight to save the ozone layer is an environmental success story and demonstrates that concerted international action can provide the opportunity for the environment to repair itself. National – Acid Rain Acid rain - caused by pollutants of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides that also emitted by aircraft engines while operations – resulted in extensive damage to trees, buildings and water bodies across Europe in the 1970's. Since then, governments in Europe and the US have made significant efforts to reduce the release of Sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere from industry with positive results. Acid rain has now been all but eliminated in these areas..

Page 10 (7m 36s)

[Audio] Local – Noise The aircraft noise at night can cause greater disturbance to local communities . It is generally quieter at night and the majority of people are trying to sleep. Also, night noise may seem worse in the summer when people are more likely to sleep with windows open. Noise pollution can be stressful to wildlife species as well and may cause physiological changes. Some airports already do have restrictions on flights at night. One such example is Heathrow airport. Night-time ( 23: 30 - 06: 00) operations at Heathrow are heavily restricted by the Government, which sets a limit of 5,800 night-time take-offs and landings a year. A night quota limit is also in place, which caps the amount of noise the airport can make at night..

[Audio] ENVIRONEMNTAL IMPACTS ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE AVIATION EMISSIONS Aviation emissions impact local, regional and global air quality. The main emissions of concern for having potential for climate change and ozone depletion are: · Carbon dioxide ( CO2) - this has a long lifetime in the atmosphere and is the principal culprit of global warming. In general terms, engine emissions are dealt with according to the part of the atmosphere they enter: Local/Regional Impact: Low-level emissions (below 3000 FEET, i.e. part of the troposphere closest to the ground): These emissions contribute to local air pollution. Engine emission performance when used below 3000 FEET (i.e. for take-off and landing) Global Impact: Cruise-level emissions: These emissions are directly injected into the free troposphere and the lower stratosphere. Most of the fuel burn is during the cruise phase, and so these emissions represent the bulk of the CO2, NOx, etc., released..

[Audio] THE DRIVERS FOR ENVIRONEMNTAL MANAGEMENT Legislation What the Organization must conform by law. Other Requirements What the Organization is required by the IATA to measure and report on environmental data. Reputation Staff, shareholders and the general public are increasingly looking to the Organization to demonstrate that it manages its impacts in a sustainable way. Financial Reducing the Organization's use of natural resources and avoiding waste will ultimately save money. Social Responsibility Personal – As individuals, we are all responsible for the environment. It is recognized that even apparently insignificant individual actions can lead to big changes. Corporate – Businesses can use their understanding of their impact on the wider world in a positive way by taking a responsible attitude and going beyond the minimum legal requirements..

[Audio] ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM An Environmental Management System ( EMS) is a framework that helps an organization achieve its environmental goals through consistent review, evaluation, and improvement of its environmental performance. The assumption is that this consistent review and evaluation will identify opportunities for improving and implementing the environmental performance of the organization. The EMS itself does not dictate a level of environmental performance that must be achieved; each organization's EMS is tailored to its own individual objectives and targets. An EMS helps an organization address its regulatory requirements in a systematic and cost-effective manner. This proactive approach can help reduce the risk of non-compliance and improve health and safety practices for employees and the public. An EMS can also help address non-regulated issues, such as energy conservation, and can promote stronger operational control and employee stewardship..

Page 14 (11m 54s)

[Audio] POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM Improved environmental performance Enhanced compliance Pollution prevention Resource conservation New customers/ markets Increased efficiency/reduced costs Enhanced employee morale Enhanced image with public, regulators, lenders, investors Employee awareness of environmental issues and responsibilities.

[Audio] ENVIRONMENTAL INITIAIVES TAKEN BY SILK WAY WEST Silk Way West Airlines continually searching an opportunity to adhere Waste Management " 3 R" core principles (reduce; reuse and recycle) That is why all generated paper and cardboard wastes are continually transported to the legally approved and licensed recycling facility. Besides reducing office waste paper, Silk Way West Airlines have initiated a plan to control the amount of paper used by pilots for flight information. We also aware that the main source of emissions in the aviation industry is a fuel consumption. Silk Way West Airlines keeps focus on consistent renewal and expansion of cleaner and quitter aircraft's fleet to reduce consumption of fuel, emissions of carbon dioxide and to limit noise nuisance. Silk Way West Airlines closely follow and explore the opportunities to mix fossil fuel with sustainable aviation fuel which results in a reduction in carbon emissions compared to the traditional jet fuel..
