Author’s Note. This Article was written to clarify general misconception and misunderstanding related to Day of Eid al Adha and Negative perception for those who don’t follow this practice. While judging anything to be Right or Wrong, we need to take into consideration from the perspective of Justice, Logical, Scientific and Cultural aspect. It is also a Justice If I have taken a Stand on one thing, then I cannot change my thought if that thing is done by someone else whom I don’t like. For an Example, if I say that scolding children to make them study is Right, then if someone else scold his children for study, I cannot say that you are being harsh to him. So your enemity or friendship cannot comes in between Justice. Secondly, I have started this article from Clearing Negative Perception first then putting forward the significance of this Festival. Because this Negative Perception is the one that has made some people keeping hatredness towards this act. Request all to read this passage with an open mind and adopt a stand keeping Justice, logic and scientific, cultural aspect in mind. Let us understand Why Eid ul Adha is prescribed by Allah The historical background of Eid al-Adha is that the Prophet Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) had a dream in which he was sacrificing his young son, Ismail (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), And Prophet dream is a mean of Revelation and hence Allah commanded Ibrahim (please be with him) to sacrifice his young son as a test of his Faith in obeying the command of Allah. Allah asks the most beloved thing from him that his young son. Prophet Ibrahim, a great believer in Allah, followed the command and prepared his son for sacrifice but Allah doesn’t wanted to take away his son but just to test his faith, and hence before he could run his knife over his young son’s neck, Allah sent a lamb for sacrifice, and instead of his son, lamb was sacrificied. And this act of Sacrifice Allah wants the entire generation to remember and thus this is been prescribed to every muslim to sacrifice cattle in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim commitment to Allah. This is been mentioned in Quran as depicted here.
Quranic Verse Regarding Sacrifice. Surah 37 Verse 99 to 105 He said: "I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me "O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!" So We gave him the good news of a forbearing son. Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I have seen in a vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: now see what is thy view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do as you are commanded: you will find me, if Allah so wills, one of the steadfast!" So when they had both submitted (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice), We called out to him "O Abraham! ... "You have already fulfilled the vision!" - thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
What we do in Eid Al Adha ?. During the celebration of Eid al-Adha, Muslims honor and remember Ibrahim’s (may Allah be pleased with him) trials, by themselves slaughtering an animal such as a sheep, camel, cow or goat. Allah has given us supremacy over animals and permitted us to eat meat, but only if we pronounce His name at the earnest act of taking life. Muslims slaughter animals in the same way throughout the year. By saying the name of Allah at the time of slaughter, we are reminded that life is sacred. Life is to be valued with utmost act of piousness and holiness..
Charity – Only 1/3 rd for Self One-third is eaten by immediate family and relatives, one-third is given away to friends, and one-third is donated to the poor ..
Intention to Sacrifice is Important. It is very important to understand that the sacrifice itself, as practiced by Muslims, has nothing to do with apologizing for our sins or using the blood to wash ourselves from sin. This is a misunderstanding by those of previous generations: " It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your devotion that reaches Him." (Qur'an 22:37) By this above verse, Allah specifies to human kind that Allah doesn’t need meat nor blood but the taqwa (piousness), intention with which we sacrifice that is important, it is the sunnah of Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) which is been followed to remember the level of Commitment one should have with Allah..
Sacrifice – Far above Ritual. The act symbolizes our will to give up some of our own bounties, in order to strengthen ties of friendship and help those who are in need. It is to train us how to surrender ourselves to the will of Allah for the sake of serving humanity. We recognize that all blessings come from Allah, and we should open our heart and share with others. Every sacrifice reinforces the quality of patience, making it grow in quality and strength. Forbearance, in turn, sustains and increases the capacity to sacrifice. Indeed, sacrifice is the essence of life and we should leave no stone unturned to sacrifice our money, comfort and time for the sake of Allah. We should make an effort to live truly to the expectations of the spirit of sacrifice that the festival of Eid al-Adha stands for..
