Recorded Sound. Domestication of Dogs. When dogs were first being domesticated, humans selectively bred individuals who had a better understanding of human gestures and communication. Although we are unsure of the traits being selected, scientists have come up with two hypotheses. The first being the by-product hypothesis and the second being the adaptation-hypothesis.
Recorded Sound. Recorded Sound. By-Product Hypothesis.
Recorded Sound. Adaption Hypothesis. Rather than selecting for tameness, the adaption hypothesis suggests humans actively selected for dogs who can fulfill roles in society (hunting and herding). The dogs who were the most successful happened to be the best at understanding cues..
Recorded Sound. Canine Observations. Since dogs are attention seekers, they are often fixated on our every move. They notice our patterns from our day to day life, and more importantly any changes that occur. Dogs can use our patterns to predict or actions and understand why we are doing specific things..
Recorded Sound. Canine’s ability to understand. An experiment was done in order to see if dogs understand the significance of pointing. In this experiment, a human hides food under one of the several. This is done out of the dogs view. The person then indicates which container the food is under by pointing at it. The results showed that dogs were able to utilize this gesture and find the reward. The experiment was repeated, except this time their were no social cues given. Without the persons direction, the dogs were unable to locate the hidden food..
Recorded Sound. Canine Observation. Dogs are very sensitive to our gaze, they can distinguish between different types of head tilts and pay close attention to our movement. Since dogs are sensitive to eye contact, they typically observe our gaze, especially during communicative interactions..
Recorded Sound. Are dogs good judges of character?.
Recorded Sound. Conclusion. While being domesticated, dogs have been conditioned to understand our body language and use it as a form of communication They have gotten so good at reading us, that they can make predictions about what we are doing in our day to day lives. Since they are so good at reading us, a dog can usually tell if someone is trustworthy or not So, if you meet someone special, you might want to introduce them to your dog first.
