BPY 2043- CHILD AND ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT  Adolescents Interviews

We can observe how some of the events of our past have shaped who we are today when we look at our own  histories. How we consciously and subconsciously view our previous experiences shapes how we approach life.

Media: Allows  teenagers to exercise some control over their surroundings and become more active participants in their own  lives. C ontribute  to teenage socialization by helping adolescents to be more self-reliant and  prosocial .  A llows  them to build their own beliefs about the world and aids them in making judgments about their own  behavior.

Sports: E xtremely  essential in shaping an individual's character and physical fitness and in dimensions, as well as its influence on their psychological, and social  lives. They also improve their social skills, learn to express their feelings, and grow self-assurance in their  abilities. Physical  inactivity is the fourth biggest cause of death worldwide, according to the World Health  Organization.

Transition: D efined  as a period of volitional identity exploration that involves “trying out various life prospects and progressing toward making everlasting decisions”.  T ransition  from adolescence to adulthood comes with expectations that one will take responsibility for oneself, make independent decisions, and become  self-sufficient. Pathways to adolescence are strongly linked to one's social class as well as the resources and support of one's upbringing

Peer pressure and substance use: T he  direct or indirect on people to follow their peers by changing their attitudes and behavior.  Around 30% of kids are offered drugs in middle and high school, according to the Alcohol Substance Abuse Knowledge  Base. Adolescent may go through physical, emotional and social changes in response to peer pressure.

Identity development: T he  development of a strong sense of self,  personality. positive adolescent self-confidence is very important as it shapes adolescents' perceptions of belonging and helps adolescents to develop strong  self-esteem. Erikson believes that establishing an identity is an important part of the process for adolescents, and that failure to do so leads to role confusion and low self-esteem later in  life.

Q1: How much time do you spend on   media?

Q2: What games, shows, websites or music she watches, listens to or play?

High school She only spent 1 or 2 hours. Did not have any social apps. Watch YouTube videos or play online games.  College Began to spend more time on media. Spent 6 to 8 hours. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, media usage has been increased. Has to attend online classes and discussions.  Ordering essential items online, food and online shopping.

High school Loved watching cartoons, for example Mr. Bean, Tom and Jerry and Pink Panther.  Liked to play auto racing games and cookery games.  College Began to watch blogs, Netflix and Korean dramas. No longer enjoys playing video games. Started to be active in social media.

Q3: Has media input increased or decreased in the past few years?

Q4: What dangers did you confront as a result of your use of media?

My interviewee acknowledged that media usage had risen steadily in recent years. According to  Datareportal’s  Worldwide Overview Report, which was released on January 27 th  2021. 4.66 billion people use internet. 316 million users have joined last year.  4% and 5% of media internet users utilize social media to get news.

She used to think the strangers she met on the internet were her actual pals.  One of her online friend made a fake account to post her false information. Research paper titled "Social Media and Teen Anxiety" has been published by the Harvard Graduate School of Education.  feeling pressured to obtain comments and likes on their post. feeling obligated to post nice and uplifting information about oneself. having someone post something about them that they can't remove or control.

Q2: Importance in their life past and present

My interviewee involved  in sport when he was 11 years  old. Mainly  involved  in football, 100m  race  and  badminton. Represented his school and  participated  in state level competition.  W on  awards of excellence in  co-  curricular  activities  continuously for 4 years.

Many advantages and plus by physically and mentally to him after he  involved  in sports.  Physical tired – better sleep – focus in class Personality changes - make him more discipline.  Gains various skills, experience and confidence that are helpful for developing his personality.

Q3: Parental concern they had to confront

His mother  was  not so  happy  but his  father supported  him.  His mother  prefered   him to focus in academic. Also  worried about his health issues.

Broke his left leg at age of 13.  MCL problem.  Pain, swelling, and instability of the joint.  Broke his right  hand. Accepted the fact. Some minor injury  such as  c alf  strains and  lower  back pain.

Q1: At what point in your life did you go through a stage transition and what was your expectations during the transition?

Q2: What are the difficulties you encountered during the transition period?

Interviewee point of  view: Transition – High school to University Transition will occur in everyone’s life Interviewee expectations: Attend  parties with  friends.  Less pressure on  studies.

Interviewee point of  view: Accepting the new  normal. Making friends with different culture, gender and foreign  students. Students are taught higher order learning at  university. Extracurricular  activities.  Romantic  involvement.

Q3:  How do you deal with transitions from high school to college?

Q4:  What do you think about student orientation program?

Interviewee point of  view: Take break from assignment and  exams. Suitable study  environment. Good Sleep. Answering practice  questions.

Interviewee point of view: Opportunity to meet members of the college  community. Acquainted with their new  home. Easier to make new  friends.

Member D Topic : Peer pressure and substance use

Q1: Do  you use substance and you  do not have  to share this if you do not  want to ?

Q2: Did  peers, at any time, pressure you to use substances and if so, what did you do?

My interviewee does not use substance.  His  parents had taught him that substance use is risky for  humans.  Lead  to other risky behaviour such as:  driving  while drunk or high,  unplanned  sex,  violence  behaviour,  self-harm ,  suicide ,  heart  disease and stroke,  mood  disorder such as anxiety and depression and sleep  high  blood pressure

He state that he had go thru a bad experience before. His friend forced to try the substance but he refuse it. He advices his friend that substance is not good for our health and substance also will destroy our body parts. Since that his friend not taking any kind of substances.

Q3: Do  you feel pressure from peers now to use substances and how do you deal with that?

Q4: Do  you or have you pressured other peers to use substances?

He didn’t experience such thing in life before. He  state that peers know well that they can’t waste their money for this substances. He  had go thru an experience where he’s friend addicted with  vaping  and he helps him to overcome from  vaping  problem. Vaping  can effect health for long-term such as lung damage and heart disease.

He  stated  that he never had done it before. He believed that substance  use is dangerous especially for teenagers because our brain goes through a serious time of advancement during our high school years . The last piece of the brain to foster controls your judgement, feelings, motivation control and dynamic.  Implies that any substance use also can harm youngster minds more than adult’s brain.

Identity  can  defined that who she is,  her  personality, race, gender, and more about herself.  She  c hanged  her personality to be a better vision of her self and to show who she is to the world.

She is an extrovert person.  Her identity known as a student  She belief that her identity projects from her family, culture, moral values, and her life goal .

She  agrees  She  need the important dimensions which reflect her  identity. Family  , c ultural , peers and race

She reflects a different identity to her family, peers, and society. Family: she  feels  hard to express her  thoughts. Peers: she feels free to express her feelings Society:  she was being aware to show who she is because people might give judgment

We  believe that our prior experiences have shaped who we are today as result of this interviewee  session.

MEMBER A (TOPIC MEDIA): Past She assumes that individuals she met on the internet were her true friends. Because of a personal incident, she realized her online pals were not her true friends.  Present She was more self-conscious Her confidence has grown because of past experiences.

MEMBER B (TOPIC SPORTS): Past Hard time managing his schedule. Punished by couch during practice. Felt down and low self-esteem. Present Learn to manage his schedule Started to be dedicated, committed to his goals, learn to be discipline and learn to try hard without giving up.

MEMBER C (TOPIC TRANSITION): Past Shy personality – afraid of public speaking  Present Changed herself to be brave and develop more confidence Her transition benefits her in a positive way.

MEMBER D (TOPIC PEER PRESSURE AND SUBSTANCE USE): Past Influenced by his peers to use substance. Confused and wanted to try  Present Clear with his goals and refuse to try it. His self-determination secured him to be stable from the pressures. Gave advice to his friends who use substances.

MEMBER E (TOPIC IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT): Past Introvert and shy during high school. Never had any plans and goals for future. Compared herself with others and tried to change herself to fit with others.  Present She divided her time for studies and work during college.  She started to be friendly. She started to have goals, build more self-esteem and projected her as an independent person.
