CHEMICAL EQUATION. The representation of reactants and products by their symbols , formulas , state , moles is called as chemical equation . E.g. 1) C + O2 → CO2 (s) (g) (g) 2) 3Fe + 4H2O → Fe3O4 + 4H2 (s) (l) (s) (g).

WRITING OF A CHEMICAL EQUATION. The writing of a chemical equation involves the following three steps . 1) The symbols and formulas of the reactant are written on the left hand side with plus sign (+) between them. e.g. Zn + H2So4 → ZnSo4 + H2 -- Reactants ( L.H.S) 2) The symbols and formulae of the product are written on the left hand side with plus sign (+) between them..

Page 4 (39s)

e.g. Zn + H2So4 → ZnSo4 + H2 Product (R.H.S) 3) An arrow (→) sign is put between the reactants and products , pointing from reactants towards products. e.g. 1) C + O2 → CO2 - 2) H2 + O2 → H2O -.

TYPES OF CHEMICAL EQUATION. There are two types of chemical equation as under: Balanced Chemical Equation Unbalanced Chemical Equation.

BALANCED CHEMICAL EQUATION. A chemical equation which contains equal number of atoms of different elements which are involved on both sides of the reaction i.e, reactant side as well as product side is called as balanced chemical equation. e.g. 1) N2 + 3H2 → 2NH3 Name of Rectant Product element side side 1) Nitrogen 2 2 2) Hydrogen 6 6.

Page 7 (1m 19s)

This shows that the chemical equation is balancad. 2) 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO Name of Reactant Product element side side 1) Magnesium 2 2 2) Oxygen 2 2 This shows that the chemical equation is balanced..

UNBALANCED CHEMICAL EQUATION. A chemical equation which contains unequal number of atoms of different elements which are involved on both sides of the reaction i.e, reactant side as well as product side is called as unbalanced chemical equation..

Page 9 (1m 45s)

e.g. 1) H2 + Cl2 → HCl Name of Reactant Product element side side 1) Hydrogen 2 1 2) Oxygen 2 1 This shows that the chemical equation is unbalanced. 2) NO + O2 → NO2 Name of Reactant Product element side side 1) Nitrogen 1 1 2) Oxygen 2 2 This shows that the chemical equation is unbalanced..
