Scene 6 (2m 44s)

[Audio] In business communications we focus a lot of our energy on communicating in the workforce. We talk about appropriate verbal, nonverbal, written and electronic forms of communication. We discuss active listening rather than passive listening and paralanguage; students learn that its not about what you say but how you say it. Because this is the final course in the business pathway, we home in on career prep and job readiness, building resumes, creating cover letters, job exploration and things of the sort. We also dive into topics like presenting, public speaking and using presentation software. The last 9 weeks of class heavily involve teaching Microsoft Office skills and having students certify as a Microsoft Office Specialist in PowerPoint..

Scene 11 (5m 3s)

[Audio] Work based learning is a capstone program for all career, technical and agriculture education classes and student organizations. General knowledge of the field is taught in each C-T-A-E course, along with employability skills necessary for success in the workforce, This general knowledge is enforced and further developed through student organizations like F-F-A--, F-C-C-L-A and F-B-L-A-. Students are then enrolled in the work base learning program to apply their understanding in a real-world, immersive, experience..

Scene 12 (6m 10s)

[Audio] Students are typically placed in one of two categories, employability skill development or cooperative. Again, work base learning is a capstone program so student placement should relate to their pathway, which would also relate to their future career goals. If their job placement relates to their pathway and career goal, they are categorized as cooperative and their placement is the capstone of student's career, technical and agricultural education. However, we are a small city with slim opportunities and we end up seeing a greater number of E-S-D placement, of employability skill development which just means that the student's job does not align with their career goal or the pathway they took in high school, but they are still able to use their placement to develop employability skill with real-world application. Students are observed on two occasions during the semester by the work base learning coordinator. Job site supervisors conduct evaluations based on job skills and general employability skills. This data is collected to determine a student's strengths and weaknesses and ensure students are making the most of their job placement and learning opportunities..
