Concept of Allergy Allergy is an abnormal reaction of the body to an allergen that enters the body by inhalation , Ingestion , injection , or skin contact . The allergic reaction is often manifested by cough , headache , skin rash , sneezing , eye redness , itchy skin , runny nose etc ..

Allergens and their types Allergens are substances that cause allergy in the body . It is a non – parasitic antigen capable of stimulating hypersensitive reactions in the body . Allergens exist almost everywhere . Some of the most common allergies are : Wool , pollen of congress grass , wheat , different kinds of nuts etc ..

Entry routes of allergens They may have different modes of entry in the body of organisms . Nose : Air borne allergens enter our body through the nose . These affect the nasal passage and other parts of the respiratory tract . Their symptoms are sneezing , coughing , asthma etc ..

Skin : Some allergens enter the body through the skin . The symptoms of skin allergy are itching , reddening of skin blistering etc . Mouth : Food allergens enter the mouth into the body . The symptoms of food allergy are swelling of lips , vomiting , cramps etc . Insect bites , Sting or Drugs : Allergens that enter the body through bites , stings or drug administration ( injections ) enter directly into the blood stream . They can be carried to other parts of the body where their effects may manifest.

Symptoms of allergic reactions Allergies occur when the immune system produces antibodies against a particular antigen . When the immune system encounters any such substance , it releases histamine and other chemicals.

Mild Allergic Reactions : Nasal Congestion ( Stuffed nose ) Itchy and watery eyes Itching Excessive sneezing Rashes on the skin.

Severe Allergic Reactions : Coughing Nausea and vomiting Anxiety Difficulty in Breathing.

Types of allergies Seasonal Allergy : Seasonal allergies occur at a particular time of the year . Seasonal Allergies are sometimes termed as hay fever . Perennial Allergy : Perenial allergies occur at any time of the year ..

Prevention of Allergy Wear sunglasses when you go outside to avoid itchy eyes . Keep house airy and dry . Avoid carpet and heavy curtains that collect dust . Blankets , carpets and linen need to be put out in sunlight regularly ..
