Activities/Learning Statement. As an arts activity, students will be instructed to make their own Chinese dragon mask using the three primary colours (red, orange and yellow), feathers, glitter and a template that will be provided. Students will be asked to trace the template that they have been provided with and then cut it out, using card stock paper. They will then decorate it with their own interpretation using the materials provided above. They will need to use the art elements of tracing, cutting, coloring/blending and pressing. This activity addresses the curriculum link ACAVAM110, as students are researching artwork from a different culture and inspiring another countries culture through their own representation. Students are discovering what their masks are telling us about the past and what meaning the masks are making within another culture. Students are also addressing curriculum links ACAVAM111 and ACAVAM1112, using colour and visual connections to aid students' choice in what their mask will look like, and by physically performing the artistic skills necessary for students to create a variety of effective artwork. Much of the Chinese New Year holiday relates to symbolism, with colours and myths all contributing to many different interpretations. Another way the Chinese symbolize with the Lunar New Year is through 12 Chinese Zodiac animals. The students on going activity is to, research the meaning behind the zodiac animal of their birth year. Students will then write a short story on why they believe their animal was chosen for the year they were born, why not another animal? This relates to the English curriculum through the links, drawing connections between personal experiences and the worlds of texts and share responses with others (ACELT1596 - Scootle ) and creating literary texts that explore students’ own experiences and imagining (ACELT1607 – Scootle . Giving the students the opportunity to write a creative story based on other cultures experiences relates to content descriptor ACELT1601, while also allowing students to connect their learning to cross curriculum link Asia and Australia's Engagement with Asia..
