The Life OF Art SIMS. By: Danielle Pierre ARH4724- The History of Graphic Design.
About Art Sims. Art Sims is an African- American graphic designer, as well as an art director, born in Detroit, Michigan in 1954. He is currently 68-years-old and is still alive. Throughout his whole career he has always aspired to show African-American representation in his and others works..
Career path to success. "SEWATMA. Art Sims first attended Cass Technical High School in his home city of Detroit. Earning himself a full scholarship allowed him to attend Michigan State University in hopes of studying art. One of his first summer jobs was working at Columbia Records where he would design his first series of album covers. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles to work for EMI to continue designing album covers. But, his determined and hard-working character showed to be resilient as he pushed through the baggage of doubtful insults from his teacher and previous employers. He become his own entrepreneur. Today, he is CEO and co-founder of his own agency called 11:24 Design Advertising. Becoming solo was the turning point in his career as he designed his most famous works during this time. His inspiration began with director Spike Lee’s movie She’s Got To Have It. Despite having no knowledge of designing movie posters, with the help of Lees’ loved movies, Sims created many infamous movie posters like Malcom X and Do The Right Thing. To this day, he’s sought out to work with black creators with projects on African-Americans..

Design Philosophy. Through Sims creating the solo agency 11:24 Design Advertising after leaving EMI because they were unsupportive of the project. This exhibits how he has lived with hurdles and views them as challenges to prove wrong rather than let it get to him. This belief, this philosophy he has lived by since his early years is how he got to where he is today with his huge success. According to Octane Design Studios, the name 11:24 that Sim chose refers to “the bible verse in the Book of Mark: [‘Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours”. ] Art explained that the meaning behind 11:24 encompassed his search for spiritual purpose through his craft.” Below is a quote stated by Art Sims in response to his plans for the future regarding retirement. “If I'm on this earth, I'm going to be doing something expressive, or creative, and I'm going to be giving back. You won't see Art Sims lying on the beach with a mint julep, pondering his life. There's too much to do.”.
Design Style. Sims encourages this perception of marking a unique identity on the world and announcing what's wrong with America today. Challenging perspective and proving success to those who doubted you. Taking a look at what design elements Sims tends to use are bold and playful hues with high saturations. He, also, seems to like manipulating perspectives of the body placements and having confrontational gazes. Creating subtle tension by warm colors for typography with cool backgrounds and vice versa. When there is high tension or serious importance he tends to use the colors red and black. The use of having a variety of fonts and choosing one depending on the project can be used for both giving a peek into what the subject matter is about or making the audience question about the characters based off it..
