The Stolen Generation and residential schools. - Between 1910 and 1970 Australian government officials forcibly took Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal children from their families and sent them to residential schools or church run missions. - Over the 60-year period approximately 25,000 were taken which equates to about 1 in 3 Indigenous children. - With the programme aiming to eradicate any trace of Indigenous culture, the children were punished for speaking their native languages. - Nearly three decades after this horrible period of Australian history, the Australian government finally offered a formal federal parliament apology. This apology was widely accepted by the Aboriginal and Indigenous people - Every Australian state has a reparations scheme and another 13 years after the apology, the Commonwealth Government announced a reparations scheme for the territories totaling about $280 million..
