RETHINKING THE ROLE OF ALUVA MANAPPURAM IN AN URBAN CONTEXT.
NEED OF THE RESEARCH. The paper is intended to understand the potential and functional character of Aluva Manappuram ..
CENTRAL RESEARCH QUESTION. SUB RESEARCH QUESTIONS.
AIM. OBJECTIVES. i. To understand the functional character of Aluva Manappuram in the urban context . ii. To understand the general characteristics of open spaces in aluva and to identify which category is Aluva Manappuram ..
SCOPE AND LIMITATION. To study the characteristics of Aluva Manappuram and formulate guidelines to put it to better use. The response of different age groups to open spaces is studied to find out the need they require. This research can be used as a potential literature case study for other developing cities similar to Aluva Manappuram in the context of Aluva . The goal of the study is to understand the functional character and general characteristics of open spaces in Aluva Manappuram .For future these space can be make more active by designing gathering spaces , Aluva manappuram history related museum , exhibitions and art form space .These spaces if once maintained and developed, then it would add on to the functional recreational spaces in the town that would support its expected residential growth and also the parent city. The limitations are we can only build temporary structure because of festival and flood . These flood prone areas withstand design can be brought.During festival time period these structures should be replaced ..

INFERENCE FROM LITERATURE REVIEW. The approaches below will help in the development of the study at various stages and to understand urban spaces and people in cities .Jan Gehl will help in understanding the use of spaces relating to public life and understand the human perception of the city and its context . His philosophy is about improving the quality of life for people living in cities by putting them at the heart of urban planning – making cities easy to navigate on foot and by bicycle and providing places to congregate. This approach has the benefit of bringing cities to life and making them more liveable..
IDENTIFIED KNOWLEDGE GAP. Aluva lacks a recreational public space which is well maintained and where people can gather and do any leisure activities. The current area of focus can be considered as the central point where the city unites for the famous Shivarathri festival and also it lies beside the main Bye pass road which increases access to the area. Also numerous government development proposals have been put forward for this area and as it is an area which already possess few basic factors required for a public space; for instance, accessibility. Image of the space has been developed as an unsafe zone of the city.Narrow streets in the northern bank cannot accomodate public transportation. Serves as a major platform for vandalism.Inactive edge conditions at the northern side compared to southern bank.Land ownership dispute between the muncipality and the devaswom committee.Absence of a commercial node on the northern side of the river has increased the population pressure on the market situated in the city core (southern side of the river)..
METHODOLOGY. As mentioned earlier, any space to be functional in an urban fabric, it shouldn’t be constant in any of its aspects and so a flexible design is more preferred for such spaces.Similarly a single conclusion cannot be made in regarding to open spaces as it purely depends on the perception of its users. So the paper includes survey , data collection and activity mapping to understand the kind of space requirement . Survey will be done with face to face interaction with people and the questionnaire comprises ten primarily important questions. The case studies would be organized and structured in a similar pattern such that it helps to get a refined result after the study. The main aim of these studies would be to pick up the good aspects from the inference and relate it to the site of experimentation and check in the possibility of it being functional in the area of focus. The main aspects that would be looked up are context, access, scale, activity, footprint, climate, maintenance, functionality, neighbourhood, typology, spatial organization and image among the people ..

NEED OF OPEN SPACES IN ALUVA MANAPPURAM QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY CONCLUSION CASE STUDIES SELF ANALYSIS.
RESULTS. These data indicate that Aluva Manappuram is primarily residential in character. If we redesign Aluva Manappuram as a park , these spaces will be utilized every hour of the day, as they are surrounded by residential homes . This space would provide everyday recreation for residents . For the families with children living here, this space will provide relaxation, stress-free living, comfort, happiness and joy. The access of residents to open spaces is very high, given that 94.0% of all the residents live within 300 m from an open space. We can only provide temporary structures here due to the festival and flood .Open areas for public use that are situated within the urban fabric of a city . Family focused with playgrounds , picnicking , swimming , tennis or basketball , as well as un-programmed open space areas which provide recreational opportunities for a neighbourhood . This open public space as a solution for problems affected in Aluva Because there is no good place for people to relax or kids to play .Provided parks are not maintained and they are not properly placed.Families and childrens are not easily accessible to existing parks. If we redesign Aluva Manapuram as a open public space , this area is surrounded by residential area , so this space will be active everyday and people can easily accessible ..
INFERENCE FROM LITERATURE CASE STUDIES. Looking at the park from the view of an urban designer we can notice that these were very interesting and attractive projects. These park is located in a complex area, an area that have cultural and social diversity. That area was significally changed after introducing the design to it. The design of Super kilen by the participation process that was done the design was able to make connection between the residence and the space and increase the sense of community, the feel of belonging. The neighborhood was unattracted place for businesses due to its unsafe nature, and that has been changed sense the opening of the park. Seeing that and see how urban design can change a neighborhood from a scary unsafe place into attraction point that attract visitors from all around is an interesting thing that made me select this project..

Survey Results The findings and implications of the paper entirely depends on the results of the primary mode of data collection I.e. survey report. The survey was done to 40 people and in direct conversation with each respondent. Idea of a Recreational Space.
Usability of the Park. Availability of Park premises during Shivarathri Festival.
Timing of Recreational Space. Amost 50 - 55% repondents prefer timing from evening till night only because they feel it is not safe to be in an open space beyond that timing ( major reason found while surveying ).
DISCUSSION. The aim of the dissertation was to find whether the current perceptions towards recreation has changed or not. This was portrayed by carrying out a few case studies and survey. The detailed study of the particular zone in Aluva provided a result which showed that people still prefer openness and greenery over other luxurious amenities and this answers the primary motto of the research. The best part in surveying was that the respondents shared their ideas and suggestions to be incorporated, such as, - Ensuring women safety in public spaces. - Provide open public spaces. - Also the introduction of street development can also ensure a better picture of Aluva. One of the main aspects that majority of the respondents gave is that all of them support productive and sustainable development but the leaders themselves are corrupted and are not genuine to their work hood as a result of which the common crowd is suffering. The case studies were selected mainly to show the reasons behind their functionality which are - Ease of accessibility to the space. - Scale of the space according to the context. - Maintenance. There is a belief that people now a days prefer shopping and other amenities over well maintained and zoned green space which is totally a misconception..
CONCLUSION. Integrating nature into cities is effective public health strategy to improve mental health . Being close to water can induce feeling of calm. These spaces make you happier , reduce your stress levels ,improve your quality of life and make you more sociable and altruistic. A short walk along a water - front spaces improves comfort levels ..
CONCLUSION. In the current sceenario, perception towards a recreational space in the minds of people is a debatable topic. Public realms or spaces are not merely related to physical fitness of a person. While especially considering India, day by day percentage of these spaces are declining. Landscaping the city is always given a lesser priority in India. But providing openness and grenery is much more than just landscaping. It has to be given the same attention that we give to infrastructural developments. As Architects, It is our duty to foresee the future potentials of the society and nurture the main ingredient of the city which is we humans itself. So the conclusion of the paper is that the perception of a recreational space is still the same and its necessity has much more increased in the recent years. Not a single person would wish to live in an area with just stacked buildings around unless and until he/she doesn’t have other option. So it is we Architects who have to provide these options and save the present and future society. Also, by this dissertation, It also becomes clear that suburbs like Aluva have much more potentials and if rightly used, it can surely create a sustainable and productive environment..
