SO INrELLECTUALLY DISABLED. Association for the Intellectually Disabled - Sri Lanka.

The Association is managed by a small group of dedicated members, including some parents of ID persons entirely on a voluntary basis. This year we celebrate 56 years of dedicated and unstinted support to many of the more than 700,000 ID persons living in Sri Lanka. the activates and the caring of ID persons is supported by 59 Affiliates who run residential and day care facilities. On behalf of the President and the Committee of the Association for the Intellectually Disabled-Sri Lanka (AIDSL) we wish to thank Ms. Rani De Alwis and her like minded friends from Perth, Australia for agreeing to organize the third Fund Raising Dinner Dance on 22 February 2025 Your contribution will be used to support the various activities we provide to ID persons in Sri Lanka. We truly appreciate your time and coordinated effort in organsing the dance to raise this donation. With your continued help we will endeavor to make the lives of most ID persons more enjoyable and meaningful. We cannot do the work for ID persons in Sri Lanka without the help from the likes of you. Thank you once again and we look forward to your continued support in the years to come.

As the recognised and approved National Organisation, We liaise with government departments who coordinate the activities of the people with disabilities. Our Organization played an active role in preparing the National Action Plan on disabilities. As a Committee Member we represented the National Council for People with Disabilities. We are a founder member of the Asian Federation on Intellectual Disabilities (AFID) and we held two International Conferences in 1995 and 2015 in Sri Lanka running for five days. There were more than 250 foreign participants for each conference..

2024 Services Rendered through AIDSL.

Most of you who attended the previous Fund raising Dinner/Dances are aware of the services we do provide. But for the sake of the newcomers we would like to highlight some of the major activities we have carried out during 2024..

A song and dance recital held annually to commemorate the International Day of Disabled persons. Over 350 ID persons with special talents and from various Affiliated institutions participate. Their performances are highly appreciated by the audiences and are a heart warming experience for all. Every institution which takes part in the event are given a cash reward and every participant is awarded a personal gift.

AIDSL Certificate Course Batch 01.

We were fortunate to conduct two training programs for Teachers, Caregivers & Parents each running over twenty Saturdays mainly on the topic 'Caring & Developing the Intellectually Disabled. All those who passed the exam were awarded a Certificate. AIDSL is now an approved Institution by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) to conduct Certificate Courses on Intellectual Disability..

TWO WORKSHOPS ON VOCATIONAL TRANSITION We have already conducted two workshops in Colombo district and Galle District with the participation of Teachers and Care Givers to identify the skills of children with intellectual disabilities at early stages. We are also planning to conduct a similar workshop in Batticaloa district in this month..

There is a crying need in Sri Lanka for caring of ID Persons who have lost one or both parents. The siblings of such persons are either gone to greener pastures or are reluctant to carry the burden of caring for a sibling Intellectually Disability either because of the stigma of having a sibling with ID or for due to financial restraints. Part of the funds you have donated to AIDSL are used for the construction of 4 Complex Housing Units in a land at Gonapola which was gifted to the Association. Your magnanimity raising funds will soon make this project a reality. We thank you from the bottom of our heart..

Our Little Picassos - Art Competition. [image]. [image] * _ ART COMPETIT!QN 024 _.

The Association holds annually an Art Competition open to all Affiliates. Selected topics are pre sent to all affiliates to forward up to three paintings done by ID, Down's syndrome and Autistic persons . Three judges select the Three contestants from each category to call at our head office at Mt Lavinia. All of the participants are given the painting sent for assessment and requested to repeat the same artwork unsupervised The Judges then select three best artwork as Winner, First Runner-up and Second Runner up. Special prizes are awarded to the three top artists in each category and All other participants are also awarded concessionary prize for participation, provide all artwork materials, lunch as well as reimbursement of the travel costs. It is a popular FUN DAY for our participants.

ID Persons from our two schools as well as from our Affiliates regularly participate in various Children's day programs such as International Disabled Day & International Down's Syndrome Day..

Sing Along Program.

A "Sing Along ' Program is conducted once a year as a Fund Raiser. It is very much a social gathering to create awareness, more than a fund raiser.

Students of Sumaga Mt Lavinia and Sithum Pathum Sevena,Gonapola, along with their parents and staff celebrate Christmas by singing Christmas Carols as an annual event.

The Annual Soft Ball Cricket Tournament is one of the favorites amongst all ID Persons. Due to inclement weather 2024 Soft Ball Tournament was held only in January 2025. The tournament is restricted a maximum of 10 teams for Affiliates all over the country. All in all a most enjoyable day for the participants.

As part of their day to day education, we encourage all day school participants to do handy work such as those shown in the slide. Very often we sell them at a Jumble sale which we hold annually. Funds generated from such activities are used to provide the participants with day outings or as gifts. In addition to the handicraft work, the students are encouraged to develop their culinary talent by making food items which they consume joyfully..

The students at Sumaga Training Centre are provided different forms of Aesthetics by visiting professionals on a regular basis. These are activities thoroughly enjoyed by students of all ages.
