[Audio] Science learning is cumulative. Students build their scientific knowledge based on what they already know and on what scientists discover. Biology is generally defined as the science concerned in the study of living things including their structure, functioning, evolution, distribution and interrelationships. Good day everyone! I am Marie Eugenie C. Soriano of Maddela Comprehensive High School, here to present my action research entitled, Jigsaw Cooperative Learning for Grade 8 Students' better understanding of Mitosis..

Page 2 (34s)

[Audio] Given this definition, it is sufficient to say that Biology is a branch of natural science that is indispensable in the fields of medicine, agriculture, petro-chemical industries, brewery, and even in geology and mining. It is in this context that teachers should give emphasis on the biology instruction in the secondary school level. The aim of science education in the Philippines is to equip the learners with skills that are scientifically based and to enable them to apply scientific knowledge in their decisions that might have social, health and environmental impact (Science CG, 2016). To ensure the full realization of these objectives, it is necessary to provide the learners the tools that they need..

[Audio] Unfortunately, available data shows that the Philippines is not performing well in the field of science. The Philippines ranked 42nd out of 46 countries who participated in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study in 2003 which was when the country participated last. This is further supported by the NAT MPS in Science as well as the MPS of the pre and post assessments conducted which consequently revealed that one of the least mastered competencies in Grade 8 Science is comparing mitosis and meiosis, and their role in the cell-division cycle..

[Audio] It has been evidenced that collaborative learning strategies not only enhances students' academic achievement but also enables students to receive constructive feedback through the cognitive process and encourages interactive learning experience Jigsaw-based teaching strategy is a strategy developed by Elliot Aronson during the 1970s. It is based on the game jigsaw puzzle, where each student has an important role in the understanding of the final product. Jigsaw puzzles offer a way to let learners discover whole – to – parts relationships.

Page 5 (2m 33s)

[Audio] This study aimed to use a modified principle of the jigsaw puzzle to help the students better understand the process of mitosis. As a cooperative learning strategy, the researcher hoped to unlock the interest of the respondents towards the topic of inheritance and variation and to Biology in general through the Jigsaw-based Cooperative Learning (JCO) approach.

[Audio] Each class was divided into 5 groups, where each group had 8-9 members. Each group solved one phase of mitosis for approximately 10 minutes. After completing each phase, the group wrote key words for that specific phase in the meta-cards given to them which was collected at the end of the class. The meta-cards were consolidated after all groups have completed all the phases. Each student also answered an open-ended question that allowed them to narrate and describe their personal learnings on a specific phase.

[Audio] This study seeks to answer the general question: What is the effect of jigsaw based learning in the understanding of the cell cycle, particularly mitosis? Specifically, the researcher is interested in the answers to the following questions: What is the mean score of the respondents before and after the implementation of JCO? Is there a significant difference in the mean pre-test and post test scores of the respondents? What is the effect size JCO to the pre and post-test scores of the respondents?.

Page 9 (4m 23s)

[Audio] For the methodology, this study utilized the Descriptive Pre test/Post test model combined with the administration of the Jigsaw Opinion Scale to gather insights on how the learners perceive the administration of the Jigsaw Cooperative Learning Method..

Page 10 (4m 39s)

[Audio] Data Analyses included the measures of descriptive statistics particularly the mean and standard deviation. In the analysis of the difference between the pre-test and posttest for mitosis, paired t-test was used and the confidence level was set at 0.05. For the effect size of JCO technique to the understanding of DNA variation, Cohen's d was used..

Page 11 (5m 4s)

[Audio] The results indicated significant improvement in the students' performance after the jigsaw cooperative learning was implemented. The t-test showed significant improvement in the performance of the students while the effect size indicated a moderate effect..

Page 12 (5m 30s)

[Audio] As for the conclusion and recommendations, the Jigsaw Cooperative Learning is an effective way in improving the understanding the Grade 8 students in the concept of mitosis and may also be used for other science concepts..
